To come CC _ It is a muggy August weekend. _ Traffic is heavy and tempers are frayed. Slower drivers frustrate speed freaksâ€"or is it the other way around? S _ Somewhere out there, somebody‘s got some sort of mechanical problem and somewhere out there, someâ€" body‘s failing a breathalyzer. â€" Abh, nothing like the simple pleasures of boating on Lake Ontario. â€"â€" Okay, so we‘re being cynical. _ Boating is so much part of our life, here in the Golden Horseshoe, that it‘s easy to take for granted what our poor landlocked cousins don‘t have. And, really, there is no sensation quite like the romantic priâ€" Â¥acy, the cool breeze, and fresh spray from the choppy blue waterâ€"yes, even Lake Ontario has blue waterâ€"â€" that stretches well past the horizon. _ Of course, most people who live in Oakville already know this. If you don‘t own a boat then you probably know someone who does. | OAKVILLE GooDYEAR‘s Every Tirs On SAE EvRENT With a half dozen clubs and miles of waterfront, Oakville is a boater‘s paradise "I‘ve been here since 1981 and I‘d say the number kam All.MILLS on tres an Cpopagege®e 297 Speers Road (at Dorvai) 845â€"4227 | «hy * s‘ _\ 4 4sl | 6 Thas.‘ ‘ 7 ‘:v:. } i# v + \\ ï¬\ â€" sepeomnmmnt t ;« ' : .‘ # #: i f & * . 9l i € '-/ | ’ n 4* ~<glp ,;f' 8 f |\ « ‘::,."; ¢ ‘ TV L P «[ Â¥ W . * A pï¬*ii ‘ I. ‘ I @@@ Boating season is in full bloom after a weekend that saw the transformation of hundreds of empty slips into a rainbow of masts and canopies. This past weekend was the official start of boating seasonâ€"the time of year when boats are lowered or launched into more than 800 permanent slips operated by the town and five private boating clubs. All you have to do is take a leisurely stroll down to Bronte Harbour or Oakville Harbour, where the sleck, colorful craft of our childhood dreams bloom into realâ€" ity, to see how much boating means to the area. And Oakville, through its Harbour Development Authonity, is umd@ue in several respects. O Fencedâ€"off areas at clubs are almost nonâ€"existent; boaters and browsers alike are welcome to wander and wish at their heart‘s content. Q Mooring fees ($2.35 per sq. ft. of the boat each year for local residents) paid by boaters go directly to a townâ€"operated account, which in turn, pays for vanous capital projects, such as the $500,000 breakwall at Bronte. "I get calls all the time from boaters in the U.S. wanting to come here for a weekend," says Beers "They think it‘s great that we offer this." One area where Oakville isn‘t so unique is the increase in power boats. Reflecting an industryâ€"wide shift, about 60 per cent of boats registered here are power boats; not too long ago, the majority were sailâ€" RBeers says this has created a demand for larger powerâ€"boat slipsâ€"â€"which is bound to cut down on the overall number of slips available for lease. With all this comes the need for safety, which is another area where Oakville seems to surpass other communties.
