Wildeats scratch out a win l HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL | By TOM MICHIBATA Oakville Beaver staff For the White Oaks baseball team, it was just a matâ€" ter of playing the waiting game. Facing Queen Elizabeth Park pitching ace Sandy Spencer, the Wildcats could only scratch out a run on three hits over the first four innings in a Halton high school baseball game at Shell Park, Thursday. But after Spencer‘s fourâ€"inning stintâ€"â€"the most allowed under HSSAA rulesâ€"â€"the Wildcats erupted for five runs off reliever Alex Harold in the very next inning and cruised to a 7â€"1 victory. The win improved the Wildcats record to 2â€"1 while the Eagcles fell to 1â€"2. Peter Wildbore and Dan Edwards hit backâ€"toâ€"back singles to load the bases before Chris Betts smashed a twoâ€"run double into the leftâ€"field corner to give the Wildcats a 4â€"1 cushion. Adam Slayer led off the fifth inning with a walk and was balked to second. Chris Hanna bunted down the third base line but the Eagles‘ Spencer, now playing third, threw the ball away as Slayer trotted home with the goâ€"ahead run. a 7â€"0 rout of Bishop Reding. m uuaresma and Aob: Samdln had two goals each. The next batter, Dan Gilpin, hit a hot smash to shortstop Mike McDonald, bringing in Edwards, and when McDonald threw wildly to first, Betts was able to scoot all the way home from second for a 6â€"1 lead. A basesâ€"loaded walk to Russ Jeffers in the seventh inning closed out the scoring. In the meantime, the Wildcats were receiving a pitching gem from Mark Wright and Clint Lawrence. Wright held QEP to a run on two hits and two walks while Lawrence tossed two shutout innings, surrenderâ€" ing just one hit and a walk. The two also combined for 10 strikeouts and picked off three QEP baseâ€"runners. QEP took a 1â€"0 lead in the bottom of the first when Harold walked, went to third on Spencer‘s single and snuck home in a rundown. Wildcats tied it in the top of the second on a runâ€"scoring single by Andy Crowe. ‘Wildcats coâ€"coach Robin Slack says it‘s difficult to say whether the club will be able to match last year‘s benchmark of losing in the second round of playoffs. "We have eight guys who are 16 or under. When you have 18â€"yearâ€"olds throwing to 15â€"yearâ€"olds, you‘re going to be outmatched."
