Dear Oakville: On our second day in port, we went on a tour of Rio de Janeiro. We drove down both the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. They were extremely long. Then we stopped at a modern cathedral. Our nest stop was at Sugar Loaf, an unusual rock formation. To get to the top, we had to ride on two consecutive cable cars. The view from the top was splendid. After Sugar Loaf we went on a jungle walk, during which we saw many tropical birds along the way. In the trees there are miniature monkeys, a few inches long, scampering around. Rio was much larger than I had expected. The city was dirty when we visited because of the rainy season. The rain washed mud down the hillsides and deposited it six inches deep in the streets. One of the things that amazed me was the inflation rate in Brazil. When we visited Belem to explore the Amazon three and a half months ago, the exchange rate was 8,000 cruzeiros to US $1.00. In Rio the exchange rate was now 20,000 cruzeiros for US $1.00! With this rate of inflation, prices cannot be marked on items for sale in stores because they would require constant remarking. Instead they post lists of prices. In taxis, the meter ran on a point system and then you would check a chart to see what so many points cost you. In this way they would just print up new sheets and charts as the inflation rose. We all found that Brazil was a fascinating country to study for our Economics class.
