THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 21, 1993 â€" 2 By ROB KELLY Special to the Beaver Peter Pomeroy will tough it out for as long as possible as Halton regional chairman despite working under a cloud of four corruptionâ€"related crimiâ€" nal charges. "I will not be offering my resignaâ€" tion," Pomeroy told Halton regional council at its regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday in Oakville. "I will continue to discharge my obligaâ€" tions to Halton in an honorable manâ€" ner." Pomeroy convened a private meetâ€" ing with councillors immediately prior to the afternoon full council session. At the private gathering, there were only "one or two negative comments" amid general support for his decision to carry on as chairman, he said. Discussion about having Halton Region pay his legal fees also surâ€" faced, the regional chairman said, buy he threw cold water on that idea, at least for now. "It was my choice that the legal fees will not be paid (by Halton)," Pomeroy pointed out. "I don‘t believe 1987 Toyota Camry LE 5 spd., A/C, moon roof, p.J., p.w. 7.990.5. 1991 Topaz Auto, air, 4 dr. In Newmarket, Mayor Ray Twinney faces charges similar to those against Pomeroy, although the cases are unrelated. Newmarket council is paying Twinney‘s legal expenses until a verdict is determined. If he‘s found guilty, the town plans on getting the money back. Asked if he felt his position as reg io n al chairman has been weakâ€" e n e dâ€", P o m e r o y replied, > "I there‘s any question this is going to hamper my ability to do the job." There are "a lot of issues I‘m going to have to be front and centre on," Pomeroy said. While "I don‘t intend to lessen my workload," reâ€"evaluating whether he can continue as chairman "is going to be a regular consideraâ€" tion." 5 Regarding legal proceedings, Pomeroy said he was anxious to get the case before the courts. "My instructions to my lawyer (William MacDonald) were to move as quickly as we possibly can. We‘re going to attempt to have it resolved this year." Milton Mayor Gord Krantz said Pomeroy will not be the only one judgâ€" ing if his effectiveness as chairman is Peter Pomeroy WE‘VE GOT A LARGE SELECTION OF BARBECUE GRILLS AND ACCESSORIES TO SUIT YOUR BUDGET! Pomeroy will not resign being substantially diminished. "I suspect all of us (on council) will be," he noted. The extent of political damage Pomeroy has suffered "can only be determined in the future," he added. For now, both Krantz and Halton Hills Mayor Russ Miller said they supâ€" ported Pomeroy‘s decision. Burlington Mayor Walter Mulkewich and Oakville‘s Ann Mulvale were more cautious. "The decision is his," Mulkewich said. "I respect his decision. It‘s not for me to agree or disagree." "It‘s always been his decision," added Mulvale. "He‘s an honorable person." Asked if she agreed with Pomeroy‘s stance, however, Mulvale would only repeat, "it‘s his decision." Pomeroy faces two counts of accepting a secret commission and two of breach of trust. The charges were laid last week following an 18â€"month investigation by Project 80, a joint OPP, York regional and Metro Toronto police corruption investigation team. Georgetown development lawyer Bert Arnold, former area builder Albert Tennant, and Pomeroy‘s wife Pat Crimmins each face one count of offering secret commissions in relation to the investigation. Crimmins, Halton‘s deputy clerk, will also stay on in her job. Wednesday Pomeroy said his wife is the person "I love so much," and "my best friend." The couple is "going to attempt to continue in the best way we can," he added.
