Spring catalogues are great to look through for new ideas. but there's noth- ing like a stroll through the real thing. The varieties. textures. and colors of evergreens never ceases to amaze me. Many nurseries are also full of annu- als, including overflowing hanging bas- kets bursting with impatiens, geraniums, and petunias. (These are ideal for this time of year - instant color outside dur- ing the day. But be sure to bring them indoors before you go to bed until there's no chance of frost during the night. There's nothing quite like the smell of fresh nursery stock ready for plant- ing... row on row of bright Pansies, perennials, evergreens, trees, shrubs, roses, and bins of bulbs and tubers for summer bloom. Ijust love this time of year. What a treat after the cold, grey spring to walk through some plant nurseries and take in the color. DISTINCTIVE HOMES As with all annual flowers and veg- etables. pansies can be planted a little deeper in the soil than they were in their peat pots or flats. Burying the stem a bit deeper gives your new annual flowers and vegetables a chance to anchor themselves well in the soil. New roots will shoot off from the portion of stem that was previously above ground. Besides. the shorter the top growth on a new plant, the better it will stand up to wind and rain. Early May is also a great time to set Now's the perfect time to plant pan- sies. They love the early, cool spring weather and are very hardy in with- standing frosts. Use them where you need some spring color - to fill in the spaces in your bulb plantings - or to accent an evergreen planting. They will bloom very nicely until your warm weather annuals start flourishing. All that browsing put me in the shop- ping mood. So, I picked up some grass seed to thicken my lawn and some pan- sies to plant.
