In recognition of Monday‘s World No Tobacco Day, the panel was part of a workshop titled Tobacco: The Facts, The Options and the Future for Halton. It was presented by the Halton Councitkon Smoking and Health and the Halton Lifestyles Coalition. "I have to deal with the dining pubâ€" lic, not politicians," she noted. "I have to respond to the demands of my cusâ€" tomers and so I have to give them a choice." BUNDLE OF 8 BOXES â€" $7.99 As evidence that the smoking public will go elsewhere if they can‘t dine in comfort, she cited two restaurants â€" one in Hamilton and the other in Burlington â€" that were forced to reinâ€" state smokers because they lost.money under a total ban. At the same time, Michaels disclosed that the separately ventillated smoking area in her Tarina Ristorante in Burlington was separated from the nonâ€" smoking area by a long hall, a location apparently acceptable to the audience who voiced the opinion that the close proximity of the two areas in most restaurants was ""a joke." But Ralph Scholtens, Burlington councillor and chair of Halton Region‘s Health and Social Services Committee, was adamantly opposed to smokers fouling the air in any public buildings, including restaurants. This would impede smokers in one restrictive municipality from seeking smoking facilities in a less stringent one, he said. His motion lost by one vote because of the "emotional charge" it creâ€" ated, he said. Since smokers are lighting up despite health warnings on cigarette packages, Scholtens said more stringent legislation is necessary, especially to reduce the effects of second hand smoke. ""‘Apparently, we are not prepared to lead people into environmental health for fear it will be considered scare tacâ€" tics," he fumed. "We‘re told we can‘t use them. But I consider them facts and education, not scare tactics." _ The final speaker, Peter Willmott, was a lastâ€"minute substitute for the region‘s medical officer of health Dr. R.M. Nosal, who was unable to attend the workshop. Willmott outlined the role of the region‘s health protection departâ€" ment of which he is director. He said the provincial government allotted $3.5 milâ€" lion to set up departments such as his throughout Ontario. Halton‘s share allowed the region to hire Willmott and 2 1/2 other fullâ€"time people to enact whatever legislation was feasible, whether "restrictive or specific." All four muncipalities in Halton are exploring more rigid smoking byâ€"laws with Halton Hill‘s new legislation now before its council and Oakville‘s and Milton‘s coming in "very soon." Willmott said people have to weigh freedom of choice against dangers to health and that the trend is gradually moving toward total restrictions on smoking in all public buildings. 69.99 _ PTgS/GSSh1S.......:............ 74.95 § P195/70SR14........................ 79.95 6 P155/80R13.... P225/60HR15 P195/65SR15 P205/65SR15 P215/65SR15: § PERFORMANCE RADIALS STEEL BELTED ALL SEASON Prof. Mary Jane Ashley of the University of Toronto‘s department of preventive medicine painted the provinâ€" cial picture of trends and the impact of smoking in Ontario. In 1989, she said 14,000 Ontarians died from tobacco use, 14 times more than suicide or traffic accidents and that 80% of all lung canâ€" cers are attributable to smoking. Only 25% of smokers reach the age of 80, she maintained. He noted the need for all groups related to the smoking issue to work together, as his does with the Halton Council on Smoking and Health, a group of community volunteers and proâ€" fessional organizations whose focus is the elimination of tobacco use in Halton. "There‘s absolutely no question this is a major health problem," she said. "Smoking affects every organ of the body including the kidney, bladder, panâ€" creas and cervix. "We must recognize the strong drug addiction of nicotine," she said. "Most people want to quit and many are sucâ€" cessful, usually after four or five unsucâ€" cessful attempts. We really shouldn‘t be looking at it as ‘unsuccessful‘ if the perâ€" son learns from it and uses what he learns the next time he or she tries to quit." She said a 1991 poll of 1,400 people indicated that harsher legislation on smoking would be willingly accepted by 84% of Ontario‘s smokers, thus leading her to conclude that smokers really want to quit. She said these and other poll results give the government "a clear mandate" for further governmental restrictions on smoking which the public will probably see in the fall. * Holiday makeovers * No stress atmosphere * Flexible hours * Open Sundays 2423 Marine Dr. (Bronte) 847â€"6452
