if) By Mark Cullen mum Some plants thrive in the shade Nobody goes out of their way to plant a tree to produce shade in which nothing will grow. You make shade to sit in while you drink lemonade. Chances are, whoever planted the trees around your yard 30 years ago has now retired and is enjoying life in Florida or Arizona, leaving the rest of us behind trying to grow things in the shade. I like the shade, myself, and there are lots of plants that are not unlike me. I recommend you try some of the new relatively low-growing Accent series, beauties that bloom their heads off all summer long, available in a variety of colours including coral, salmon, red and orange. In addition to impatiens, try Fibrous begonias, the most versatile of all annual flowering plants, as these beau- ties grow 8-10 inches tall in a nice mounding form with white, pink or red flowers in profusion all summer long. The leaves have a characteristic waxy appearance. sometimes giving fibrous begonias the name wax begonias. Let's talk about some annuals, for instance. Impatiens, as I'm sure you know, are the most popular annual flower of all, lending themselves so nicely to growing in the shade. Other shade loving animals include coleus, the beautiful plant grown pri- marily for its foliage, with a rainbow of colours in every plant; browallia. BURLINGTON! 1059 ROBARTS RO., OAKVILLE Hosta also produce a beautiful spike of flowers in mid summer, all of them suitable for cutting, most of them with some fragrance. This plant manages to co-exist quite nicely with most tree roots and is just a marvellous addition to any shady garden. Insect and disease resistant hosta is almost fool proof. especially if you like the colour blue; and tuberous begonias known as the tuber rose growing 10-12 inches high with huge rose-like flowers dripping off the watery but firm stems. If you‘re looking for perennials for the shade, how about some flowering plants that come back year after year. Hosta, my favourite of all perennial flowering plants, is available in a wide variety from short little green leafed plants to all variegated plants 18-22 inches high, not to mention the solid green hosta that looks so beautiful all summer long. One of the most attractive perennial ground covers. in my view, is pachysandra otherwise known as Japanese spurge. It has a glossy strong green leaf, is almost completely insect and disease resistant, and it self propa- gates, so it thickens up an area very nicely over a period of 3 or 4 years. Periwinkle is another lovely ground cover with glossy teardrop shaped leaves about an inch long with butter- cup shaped flowers of sky blue. Plant pachysandra and Periwinkle about 6 inches apart for a real nice show within a few years. A flowering shrub that does well in shade is P.G. hydrangea which blooms LIMITED . COUNTRY, YET CITY CAN BE ALDERSHOT COURT $229,900 RETIRE HERE, BURLINGTON in mid to late summer with a gorgeous creamy white flower shaped like a lilac but without the fragrance. But what it lacks in fragrance, it makes up for in longevity. P.G. hydrangea is a hardy plant that will bloom for almost 8 weeks and, in fact, holds on to its bloom right through the winter months in most cases. Also for the shade kerria japon ica, a beautiful strong lime green colored leaf makes this a real standout in full shade. Kerria japonica also has a beau- tiful double yellow flower in mid June, well worth noting. It grows to about 6 feet tall. Add to your list of shade tol- erant shrubs silver leaf dogwood and, of course, burning bush or euonymous alattis, an excellent shade tolerant shrub which gives good fall colours. A shade tolerant perennial that is a native plant, is completely resistant to virtually all insect and disease prob- lems, spreads by itself, in fact, you’re going to end up giving it away, with a lovely little fragrant flower on it which springtime for little girls are made of. I'm talking about lily of the valley. It tends to be overlooked because it's considered by some to be a weed, or it's just not considered to be exotic and the kind of thing you would put in your yard. Wrong-ol I think it's a gorgeous looking plant, I have lots in my own yard, and you can keep it in check using some lawn edging or the like. Enjoy gardening in the shade. From a book called Secrets From The Lives Of Trees Jeffrey Goelitz, the author, reports that biologists at Dartmouth College observed a phenomenon during experi- ments with poplars and sugar maple seedlings where trees actually talked to each other. After insects began devouring the seeds of several baby trees, nearby healthy specimens, as well as the ones being eaten, dramatically expanded the amount of tannin in their systems. The biochemical changes in the seedlings proved to the researchers that some form of communication was taking place between the trees. Similar results were found in South Africa during experiments performed by Wouter Vanhoven how noted that acasia trees communicated with each other within 50 yards when attacked by insects, once again raising their natural defences by increasing the amount of tannin in their systems making the trees poisonous to predator insects. According to Jeffrey Goelitz, his efforts put out to befriend his trees rewarded him with an appreciation for their wisdom and the ability to be con- tent in their surroundings. I quote, "I learned that behind the surface appear- ance of a tree lay highly intelligent functions that contribute to the well- being of planet earth. In their presence, I felt calm clarity.
