Hwy. 401 Pickering, Ontario 428â€"6316 For my money, one of the best Merlot wines I have tasted, is the Chilean Walnut Crest Merlot. It costs around $7, a wine which I can recâ€" ommend to those who, from time to time enjoy a "down to earth" good, basic red wine. As I mentioned, the taste of a Merlot is unmistakably typical. My attempts to describe the wine certainâ€" ly would fall short but for one memâ€" ory of my boyhood. From time to time we would raid the fields of commerciallyâ€"grown poppies and eat as many of the seeds as we could. More than once I tasted them when they were not quite ripe, a taste which I find usually also in a good Merlot. Most Merlot wines and most of the ones we can buy here, are drinkâ€" able and are fine wines to go with BBQ meats and even pasta.Unlike many other red wines, there is usualâ€" ly very little tannin on the taste and therefore may be a good wine to try if one finds other red wines too astringent to the palate. Although predominantly a French grape, very few Merlot varietal wines are produced there, as most of the Merlot is used in blending with others. To the best of my knowledge we have only two listed in our stores. The Merlotfrom B G sells for about $9.60 a bottle while a Merlot from Labet is listed at $7.35, both of them worth a try. The Hungarians have entered our market with two wines. You may try the Merlot from Chapel Hill at $5.75 or the Merlot St. Stephens for five cents less. Is there really a Chapel Hill Winery in Hungary? The four Italian Merlots are unknown to me. I have sampled some in the past and always thought that the Italians make much better wines from their own native varieties than those recently introduced. The cheapest one listed is from Bulgaria, the Merlot Sophia from Vinimpex. According to my references, nobody really knows how long the Merlot has been with us. Perhaps it is one of the original French red wine varieties, such as the Pinot Noir and the Cabernet Sauvignon. What we do know, however, is that it is named after a bird and as birds have been forever in France, I suspect that the grape has been as well. The bunches of berries produce a fine fullâ€"bodied, yet mild wine that is very characteristic. Such a wine is often used as a blending wine with Cabernet Sauvignon but of late is establishing itself as a single variety wine as well. All red Bordeaux wines, even the great ones, have Merlot blended within, in order to mellow the rather harsh Cabernet Sauvignon. Normally a Merlot will not age as long as a Cabernet for instance, but the newer styles, especially those coming out of South America, have enough acidity and extracts to permit cellar aging for several years. Mild wine from the Merlot
