Oakville Beaver Weekend, Sunday, June 13, 1993 â€" 1 (Continued from page 3) ing athlete and president of her Student Council, came on board about Teens eager to get a year ago. There is a third student member, representing the private schools, Catherine Brown, currently in What Makes Us Better? These three young women serve with an assortment of adults including councillor Ted Smith, Police Constable Tom Chapman, repâ€" resentatives from both Boards of Education, and four community memâ€" bersâ€"atâ€"large. The committee has been in existence since 1984, formed at the request of the Attorneyâ€"General‘s office; it is chaired by the Mayor. Weren‘t these two youngsters just a bit intimidated by the committee? Ribaric noted with a grin, "It was pretty scary; everything went so fast as they went through the agenda, readâ€" ing the minutes and stuff. Finally, I got the hang of it though â€" and memoâ€" rized everybody‘s name. Then I got to know Alison, so I felt better." Moffatt said much the same thing, though she added, "When I walked into my first meeting, it was a really welcoming atmosphere. They made me feel welcome and helped me to participate by asking questions." She smiled brightly. ‘"I‘m not a shy person, so I gave my pointâ€"ofâ€"view. But it was pretty weird at first. Especially with the Mayor." (Who has quite a good sense of humor, she would add). According to Carol Provost, a staff resource. person in the Town Clerk‘s Departmentexplained that the commitâ€" tee had actively encouraged younger students (Grade 8 as opposed to high school age) to apply for membership, with the hope that they would stay longer, be more proactive, and give continuity to the work. Both Moffatt and Ribaric said they were eager to apply when they found out about it. "I had already seen presentations at our school on drinking and driving and drugs," said Moffatt. "They really got to me. It bothered me that people would do such stupid things." Similarly, Ribaric had seen a powâ€" erful video presentation at White Oaks Secondary School. "At the end of the Dr. Brian Way video," she said, "it showed a baby in a coffin. The baby had been killed by an impaired driver. It got to my whole class. So when an opening on the committee came up, I went for it. I â€"thought it was a way I could help stop this." Going to the Conference last month was just the kind of reinforceâ€" ment the two teens needed to spur them on. They came back to Oakville loaded with colorful, provocative posters and clever fundraising ideas. Moffatt is prepared to start an OSAID group in her new high school next year and Ribaric â€" who will be attendâ€" ing Loyola which already has an OSAID group â€" will bring her new wealth of knowledge on the "real conâ€" sequences of riskâ€"taking". Through the conference, both girls learned about networking, event planning, and motivating their schoolmates. They were particularly touched by a young man who came to speak about his personal experience with drinking and driving. He had suffered brain damage in the accident and couldn‘t remember if he was the one driving. His best friend was killed. What the reporter wanted to know was... where are the boys on the Committee? And were there young males at the Conference? A majority of girls were at the Conference too, our youth members noted. "I don‘t want to sound sexist or anything, but statistics show guys cause most of the accidents," the Pilgrim Wood student said. "They are most of the problem." The obvious question then is how to make them "part of the solution?" It is just one of the challenges these two young women are itching to tackâ€" le. wishes to announce the opening of his office limited to Orthodontics for Children and Adults in moving expenses.
