Constable Meg Mickelson and Linda Freeman have been charged with the task of writing a guide to 911 use and alternatives to calling the emergency line. "The 911 system is plagued by inappropriate use," Halton police Chief James Harding recently told a meeting of Halton‘s police serâ€" INSIDE Today‘s Paper » PROFILE Drinking drlvmg Teens have sober message Page 3 TRAVED .:z es 22 19â€"21 CLASSIFIED..................... 23â€"27 PECIAL SUPPLEMENTS Loblaws, Canadian Tire, A P Food City, Biâ€"way, Fidelity Far East Fund Mark Slipp, Investment Executive BURNS FRYimmo (416) 359â€"4633 vices board. Just over two months ago, Mickelson was at a meeting of Burlington‘s Aldershot area Community Consultation Committee (committees set up to serve specific communities by bringing community representaâ€" tives and community police offiâ€" cers together). ‘"We were asked to explain the 911 system and we explained the priority of calls...priority, ASAP, service calls. All the information came as a complete surprise (to the public)," said Mickelson. Police respond to calls based on emergency, as soon as possiâ€" ble, and service needs. So when Police Week rolled around last month, a poster on 911 was displayed at the regional disâ€" play in a Georgetown mall. An article was also drafted for later publication in local papers, explaining 911. "911 is being abused. A lot of the public think 911 is the only number we (the police) have," Mickelson told police services board members. Freeman said some areas in the region can‘t dial 911 but still have to use a sevenâ€"digit emergency number because they‘re on border exchanges. Those in west Burlington, if they dial 911, will get Hamilton‘s 911 service (See ‘Abuse‘ page 13) Perfect day for Picnic in Park The Oakville Historical Society‘s 27th Annual Picnic in the Park goes today from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Lakeside Park at the foot of Navy Street.
