Acting principal Keith Rupka dismissed the students at 12:30 p.m. shortly after a "wellâ€"planned" food fight broke out in the school‘s cafeteâ€" ria. With exams beginning Thursday, the school was scheduled for disâ€" missal at 1:30 p.m. But at 12 noon a food fight erupted in the Montclair Drive high school‘s cafeteria splattering about 300 students and staff with ketchup and eggs. "There wasn‘t any damage but there was ketchup and kids brought some eggs in. The cafeteria was enough of a mess that it would have taken us quite a while to get it cleaned up, " said Rupka. It happened quickly. "It was over in about 10 seconds. One of the students turned the lights out. That was part of it, as I say, it was really well planned and executâ€" ed," said the principal. Rupka called the prank more disruptive than destructive. "It‘s the kind of thing that most schools get towards the end of the year," said Rupka. "Yesterday was an example that they had it extremely well planned and were being as creative as they can be. That‘s going to happen. That‘s adolescent behavior." It took a couple of caretakers over an hour to clean up. "Our only concern is that it‘s not going to lead to destruction of propâ€" erty so that more than anything else, having the presence of staff out there can prevent anything like that, which is somewhat harmless in nature in terms of damage to property, from turning into that or causing physical harm to individuals," Rupka said. It‘s proving difficult for school officials to get information about the food fight, because exams began the following day. Rupka believes some senior students were involved. "It‘s a normal kind of thing that at all schools we watch out for and we have supervision. It‘s the kind of pranks that, particularly senior stuâ€" dents, will tend to get involved in," said the principal. However disciplining seniors, particularly graduates, is difficult. A formal reprimand and contacting parents is the only avenue open. Other, junior students involved, when caught, will face some compensatory cleanâ€"up duties around the school next fall.
