Elevenâ€"yearâ€"old Krystal Langenberg knows. On Tuesday, the Grade 6 student was named an "Environmental Citizen of the Future" at St. Vincent‘s School by Environment Canada‘s National Water Research Institute (NWRI). Langenberg‘s 350â€"word essay, Let‘s Take A Stand, on sustainable developâ€" ment earned the Oakville student the award. "By the time our children are 20 years old, they will have to wear special suits to stop them from burning...that is, if we keep on polluting our earth and destroying our ozone layer," reads Langenberg‘s essay. "Sustainable development is what we could do to keep our environment and clean it up a bit," explained roR WA R WAÂ¥ LESS! Krystal Langenberg Langenberg shortly after reading her awardâ€"winning essay to fellow students (an exercise Grade 6 teacher Cathy Sverko hopes will inspire students). "Writing (the essay) was not hard. I . didn‘t even have to brainstorm," said Langenberg after receiving a plaque and science book from NWRI science writâ€" er Vik Peck. The NWRI also gave simiâ€" [ ~lar awards to the school. Langenberg said she just wrote about the small environmentallyâ€"friendâ€" ly actions she‘s encouraged to do in her own life, at school and home. For instance, she said, at school stuâ€" dents help the custodian do garbage pickâ€"up around the school site each month. At home, she‘s encouraged to turn off lights when leaving a room, to recyâ€" cle and to turn off the tap while brushâ€" ing her teeth. That was something that inspired Langenberg‘s mom, Gloria, who was onâ€"hand for the presentation. It‘s a famiâ€" ly joke to say "Turn off the light, daddy doesn‘t work for Hydro" (Langenberg‘s father is employed by Bell) in family attempts to observe conservation rules. Langenberg was the essay contest‘s junior division winner. Others included primary finalist Lauren McEachern of Grade 4 at Burlington‘s Rolling Meadows Public School and senior finalist Robin Campbell of Grade 8 at Toronto‘s Humbercrest School. The NWRI is a branch of Environment Canada and works out of the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington. This is the essay contest‘s first year, an idea that stemmed from the urge to know how much school children had learned through field trips . to an open house (the theme was susâ€" tainable development) at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters last year. Any school which had made a trip to the open house was notified about the essay contest. St. Vincent‘s was among them. "Children, as a rule, probably have a lot more to say about the environment than they‘re given credit for," said Peck. "We were surprised at some of the ideas young people have and the fact that they‘re taking action," Peck told students. Langenberg‘s mother reflected how her daughter‘s younger brother, Peter, aged 9, will notice factories and air pollution on family outings. "They‘re aware to the point that it bothers them," said Langenberg‘s mother. "These kids know a lot more than my parents or I ever will. My brother explains recycling to me," commented Langenberg‘s 17â€"yearâ€"old sister, Tanya, who‘s starting university next fall, but took time out to share her sister‘s moment in the spotlight.
