A total of 92 students, repreâ€" senting several bands and choirs, and music teachers Janice Crewe and Karen Stothart attended MusicFest ‘93 where they found themselves among 7,000 of the best young musicians and singers from across the country. It was a "best of the best showcase" with entrants having to earn gold in some 80 regional festivals repreâ€" senting 450,000 students just to receive an invitation to the Edmonton Convention Centre for the fiveâ€"day event. Despite the stiff competition, however, the OTHS Woodwind Ensemble were awarded a national gold rating which was supplementâ€" ed with silver awards for the school‘s Wind Ensemble in the senior concert band division and silver for the school‘s junior high kids in their concert band section as well as a bronze for the chamâ€" ber choir. "I was very pleased," said Crewe, OTHS music teacher and band director. "I thought they couldn‘t have handled themselves better under this much stress. It was a duke, the Duke of Earl to be exact who provided O‘Grady with the necessary edge over 31 other contestants. O‘Grady sang the Gene Chandler song before a crowd of 300 at the Sheraton Centre and the response of the judges and the audience was to give the 20â€"yearâ€"old Oakville resident second place and a CD player for his efforts. "The song complemented my voice," says O‘ The road to the Sheraton Centre involved a qualifying round and finals at The Brickhouse (Maplegrove Village Mall). Judging was based on total image, voice, enthusiasm, talent and crowd response, he says.
