Browne, the fundraising chairman of the event, will be joined by Jeff McCarrol, head tennis professional at the Ontario Raquet Club in Mississauga (left), Rick Sikorski, head golf professional at Greystone Golf Club in Milton (above swinging golf club) and Peter Mickus, of Burlington. In a strategy to cope with the provincial expenditure control plan, as it‘s called, Halton‘s budget committee met Wednesday and approved docking boards and agenâ€" cies it funds approximately $1â€"milâ€" lion, then cutting the remainder from regional government proper. Halton‘s budget committee wants to slash the $40â€"million police budget by $897,000, cut other agencies it finances by â€" $117,000, and eliminate $925,000 from regional accounts for a total of @125 Cros Ave. @135 Trafaigar Rd. 849â€"6356 +2303 Lakeshore Rd. Within its own sphere Halton will â€" if full council approves the recommendations â€" eliminate $268,000 in health and social serâ€" vices expenditures; chop $176,000 from administration and finance budgets; trim $113,000 from planâ€" ning and public works; take $261,000 out of the utility budget; and $60,000 from waste processâ€" ing. Another $47,000 will be cut here and there. The moves stem from the provincial announcement that municipal governments across Ontario will receive $175â€"million less from the provincial governâ€" ment this year as part of the general $4â€"billion cutback under the expenâ€" diture control plan. Of that, $111â€"million will be taken out of general financial transâ€" fers to municipal governments, and $64â€"million from specific provinâ€" cial project funding, mostly for roads. In addition to the $175â€"million hit under the expenditure control plan, municipalities expect to have to find another $275â€"$290â€"million to cope with provincial funding clawbacks under the controversial social contract legislation tabled at Queen‘s Park earlier this week. Under the terms of the social contract, municipalities will have to achieve the expected savings by paring back employee compensaâ€" tion, so as to alter the structure of local government. The money can‘t be taken out of other budgets such as building, equipment, or roads. The Halton Regional Police Service Board has yet to formally respond to the regional proposiâ€" tions. The board is expected to disâ€" cuss the matter at a meeting next Thursday , regional officials said. Burke also warned that financial difficulties at Queen‘s Park are far from over, since the provincial govâ€" ernment is still expected to add roughly $10â€"million in deficit spending to its debt this year. Regarding further rollbacks in transfer payments, Burke said Halton could well see "expenditure control plan two and expenditure control plan three" in the future. Likening the situation to a hockey game, he noted, "We‘re still in the first period. There‘s more to come."
