Last week, Steers was nominated by her colleagues as first recipient of a new recognition award of the Halton unit of the Association des Enseignants et Enseignantes de I‘Ontario (AEFO). The Oakville resident of close to 20 years was honored â€" through a secret ballot nomination of the unit‘s 55 members â€" for her contriâ€" bution to her peers, community, education and the enrichment of French language education. "I was very surprised, very pleasantly surprised," said Steers. "It‘s quite a privilege to be nominatâ€" ed by my own peers. It means a lot." At the same time, the principal of the 220 JK to Grade 8 students at Oakville‘s Frenchâ€"only school also became a grandmother for the third time. She noted her own chilâ€" dren attended Ecole Steâ€"Marie. "I‘m pleased to be working in education. My mother was right," said Steers, noting her mother always saw in her an educator. This is Steers‘ second goâ€"round as an educator. She began teaching in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario. Raised in a Frenchâ€"speakâ€" ing family, Steers, of course, taught French by trade. She later left the work force to raise a family and returned as a French teacher at Burlington‘s Ecole Stâ€"Philipe fifteen years ago. Steers became principal at Ecole Stâ€"Philipe before moving on to the principalship of Georgetown‘s Ecole Sacreâ€"Coeur and then coming to Oakville two years ago to take on the job of principal at Ecole Steâ€" Marie. Steers admits her role as princiâ€" pal in all three of Halton‘s Frenchâ€" only schools may have been a major ‘reason AEFO regional members were able to nominate her for the award. I hope and pray our young students will ‘continue what we have started as educators," said Steers. Although there is no organized French cultural organization in Oakville, there is in Burlington, and Steers has remained committed to supporting all French activities both inside school walls and out in the community. Steers‘ name proudly sits, to this point, by itself on the AEFO recogâ€" nition plaque in its first year, but there‘s plenty of room for other names. The principal said the memâ€" bership has experienced a big turnover in the past, but has finally gained many experienced teachers to make the new annual award a worthwhile exercise.
