Big Sisters host Strawberry Tea today The Oakville Big Sisters hosts its Strawberry Tea today (Sun. June 20th) at St. Mildred‘s Lighthoum School, 1080 Linbrook Rd. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Comic actors that he admires are Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, and John Ritter â€" particularly back in his Three’s Company days. “Yeah,” he says. “It was a pat on the back. It’s nice to know some- body else is impressed.” Adding, “You can think you’re good, but unless somebody says you’re good, you never really know. Maybe you’re wasting your time,” he grins, “but I plan to go on in the business.” He says he doesn’t have to be a big Hollywood star; he just wants to perform. “1 love it,” he asserts. “I love every movie I’ve ever scen,” he insists. His greatest claim to ‘fame’ though has been his musical and comic abilities. His friends call him a natural talent. Since Grade 3, he has been singing and acting in musicals like Oliver and Pinocchio, in elementary school; and Little Shop of Horrors (he was the den- tist) in Grade 10; Exit the Body in Grade 11; and this past year in the award winning Love Mouse â€" a one act play for the Sears Drama Festival. Mark won an Award of Excellence for his star-tum in Love Mouse. That means organizing your time. In addition to taking classes, he has a part-time job at Bruno’s Market, and he spends time with a five-yearâ€"old boy as a male ‘role model’. i “That’s good,” Mark says, “because I get to act like myself around him and he doesn’t know the difference.” (Continued from page 3) Student Council activities were a lot more work than he’d anticipatâ€" ed. “You hear a lot about it being a popularity contest," he says, “but its not. Not a week goes by when you’re not doing something or helping someone else do some- thing.” Mark Chasing show-biz dream B_eer fromgzlfl .67 case of 24â€" batch size 6 cs of 24/48ct Wme from 260 per bottleâ€" batch size 25â€" 750 mL bottles Valid until June 30th only. The World According to Mark: “I have my ups and downs like everybody else. But my downs Mark claims to be a laid-back sort of guy. Even the pressure of writing OAC exams doesn’t faze him, he says. Although he admits, “Three or four years ago, I would have been bouncing off the walls. Things change.” Indeed they do. “I’ve become close with a lot of the teachers,” he notes with a grin. “They used to rue the day I was put onto their attendance lists. Now I can joke with them about the old days.” Mark says he knows his chums see him as a funny guy, but he also thinks they have developed a new respect for him. 2‘1 think I pulled am,” he says, “when a lot of people didn’t think I could.” “It’s wonderful to be the baby of the family,” the teen says. “You’re the last one, and they know you’re the last one, so they do all they can. What can I say? They’re wonder- ful. I’m blessed.” And his friends, how do they see him? able to convince the three schools to which he applied for admittance to take him on. They all say he needs more seasoning, more stage work, more life experiences. He says there is no way he’s giv- ing up. For this year, he will work on building a resume, auditioning as often as possible in every con- ceivable venue. Mark was born in Mississauga, but has lived in Oakville since he was five. He is the youngest'of three children. His parents Joanne and Reg Forward have always been tremendously supportive. ‘ “They were pretty nice when I auditioned,” the QEP student says. “They give you hints, and tell you that you’re good. They say don’t give up.” “It’s frightening, too,” he says, “because you don’t know what you’re going into. You walk around and say you hate school for years, but really when it comes down to it â€" I don’t think anyone does.” There is no doubt this slightly whacky guy is going to miss his friends and his captive audience. Where does he see himself in five years time? “I guess I’ll be workin’ my butt off trying to get somewhere.” don’t last long. I try to find humor in everything. Some people say that’s bad, but I don’t know how being funny can be bad.” He doesn’t sound funny when he says “sadness” is the prevailing emotion as he closes the book on high school. “It took me seven years to get settled in this school,” he says (QEP goes from Grade7 to OAC). “In jail,” he says seriously and grins. “Kidding.” We have been "Frying" since 1967!
