On Thursday he was at Trafalgar Road and Dundas, then Mississauga City Hall and finally Dixie Road and the 401. While Kilby has been reward- ed with only a couple of leads, his cause has been bolstered by the overall response to his plight. “A number of people who have been unemployed have encouraged me to keep going,” he says. “A lot of truck drivers give me the thumbs-up and honk” Tired of tenuous pan-time employ- ment - and sending out 120 resumes in the last three weeks - Kilby took his cause to the streets this week with a sign that said “I’m not overjoyed at being unemployed. Call Rick at 849- 0140.” He started out first thing Wednesday morning on the QEW, but moved along after a tow truck driver told him the OPP was on its way because he was slowing the flow of curious comâ€" muters. “I feel that I can advertise a little better with traffic,” he explained. “Butl won’t do anything illegal to get a job.” ick Kilby’s resolve to help oth- ers is matched only by his .. ‘ detemiination to find a job Kilby quit work two years ago when his employer wouldn’ tsanction a two-year leave of absence so that he could join the missionary group Operation Mobilization. After working in Africa and Central America ever since, he injured his back and returned home. Now he has to find work. “My ideal job? One that I can bring home a paycheque,” says the Oakville resident “I’ll start at the 'bottom. If I have to I’ll clean toilets.” Kilby’s story starts in November 1990 when, as a pesticide technician with Ralston Purina, he asked for a two-year leave. When his boss said no he was forced to resign after more than 17 years with the company and joined Operation Mobilization through Mississauga’s Park Royal Bible Church. After a six-week stint in Germany, Kilby embarked for Africa where he boarded a ship to spread the word over six countries through Christian and educational books. Still hurt, his days were spent working part- time at the Price Club, his nights curled up with a heating pad. A car accident in March left Kilby without a vehicle and soon he was eased out of the Price Club. A stint with a car dealership proved little better.
