1101 UPPER MIDDLE ROAD I 338.2201 For the most abundant and the healthiest harvest on fruit trees, it's best to thin out some of the fruit when it is young and small. Cherries are the exception and don't usually require thinning. On apple trees. each spur may produce a'cluster of fruit and since a single apple is less likely to become dis- eased, you should thin the young fruit out leaving only the largest apple on each spur. This requires some caution not to damage the spurs when thinning. One of the best methods of feeding mature fruit trees is to hammer Ross or Jobes Fruit Tree Fertilizing Spikes into the ground around the trees in early spring. These spikes will then feed the tree for the entire season. If you didn't get a chance to fertilize your trees in this manner, then you should start fertil- izing them now with the methods usual- ly reserved for younger trees and trans- plants. Use the water-soluble fertilizers such as RX15 or granular 6-12-12 dug in around the soil and the base of the trees. Follow package directions and continue to fertilize up until mid August. Then, when the ground dries out, so do the feeder roots, causing damage to your trees. Any major pruning on fruit trees should be reserved for late fall and early winter and consists mainly of directing the growth of branches outward from the centre of the tree for maximum sun exposure to all parts of the tree. For now... spraying, feeding and watering are your most important tasks. Here's wishing you an abundant har- vest! _ as each spur will produce fruit for ten years or more. Ideally, there should be one apple every six inches along the branches. Pears don't require much thinning but if an extra heavy crop sets in, you might want to remove any undersized or damaged fruit; on early- bearing trees. 4 to 5 inches. Thinning is a good means of cultivating larger, healthier fruit and prevents branches from snapping under a heavy load. l Canada "lt,t.,!,,sitjliylty Canada Trust Realty Inc/Realtor -AtEiooattrBr Sasha's“: J! 1'2,7,t,'c,, 22 74 LAKESHORE ROAD W. - 8473030 Sta!
