JOHN‘S UNITED The Cat Who Wasn‘t There by Lilian Jackson Braun published by Jove Books 1993 I am a former dogâ€"lover who was reluctantly converted into a catâ€"person by the requirements of our lease and some hard work on the part of my cat Ellery. Knowing Ellery has helped me appreciate the two wonderful cats who are the real heroes of Lilian Jackson Braun‘s series of mysteries. Koko and Yum Yum are Siamese cats who live with (you can hardly say "belong to") Jim Qwilleran, a former newspaper reporter who now writes an occasional column and lives in a very rural community a hundred miles north of everything. Koko has a mysterious talent for solving mysterâ€" ies â€" with a little help from Qwilleran, naturally, but it‘s Koko who really uncovers the clues and points out the fallacies in his human companion‘s theories. The books are filled with intriguing characters and a gentle sense of humor. In this one, Qwilleran leaves the cats behind and joins a group of Cats are the real heroes TRAFALGAR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 354 Upper Middle Rd. at Trafalgar. But he can‘t escape mysâ€" tery... their tour guide dies unexpectâ€" edly and the bus driver disappears. When he returns, Qwilleran discovers that Koko began howling in the night at precisely the time the tour guide died. Clearly, Koko knows something is wrong. But these complications only make the story more satisfying, and following the twists and turns of the plot will keep the reader interested â€" especially if he, or she, likes cats as well. The situation is complicated by a stranger who seems to be following Qwilleran‘s girlfriend Polly, and by the return of Dr. Melinda, who is still hoping Jim will marry her.
