If there‘s anyone out there with $30,000 to spare the Town would sure like to hear from you. Provincial policy dictates that it will subsidize the replacement of modified vans or small buses used for the physically disabled provided they are six years of age or older. The careâ€"Aâ€"vans slated for substituted during the next two years will each be eight years old at the time they are retired. On Tuesday, the Community Services Committee voted to direct staff to seek two corporate sponsors to share in the purchase of a pair of new careâ€"Aâ€"van vehicles. These would replace two aging buses brought into the Oakville Transit fleet in 1986 and 1987. Although the Town has three difâ€" ferent vehicles to choose from â€" which range from $60,000 each to $200,000 â€" it is leaning toward the middle ground of a modified low floor bus with ramps for wheelchairs and no steps for passengers to climb. The new vehicles â€" to be purâ€" chased in 1994 and 1995 â€" are expected to cost about $120,000 each. Each is eligible for a 50% subâ€" sidy from the province, leaving $60,000 to be shared by the Town and a corporate sponsor. "We are suggesting the Town acquire the second type of vehicle which has the versatility for use in either careâ€"Aâ€"van or Community Bus services and possibly in lightly patronized conventional services," said coâ€"ordinator of special services Roy McEwen. Medeiros Boat Works Ltd. has been producing highâ€"quality craft since 1979 on one acre (of the Medeiros‘ 100 acres) currently zoned agricultural. In Sept. 1991, representatives of the family appeared before Council to try and get an "exemptâ€" ing byâ€"law" which would allow them to stay. The Town, they explained, has collected commercial taxes from the company since 1987 and has even gone to Medeiros twice to have its TOWARF boat repaired. Compounding the situation was an order by the chase of such vehicles.
