AND THE NEXT: $500,000 in prizes is only one reason to enjoy salmon fishing Last year, more than 300 fishingâ€"related charges were laid in the Lake Ontario district, the majority of them for fishing without license or having more than one line in the water, said MNR spokesman Ken Snowden, a conservation officer for Halton Region. Of course, fishing from shoreâ€"â€"particularly Bronte Pierâ€"â€" is also popular, although your chances are increased considerably come fall, when the salmon come in to spawn. o matter where you drop a line, an Ontario fishing license is mandatory for individuals between the ages off 18 and 65. Seasonal fishing licenses are availâ€" able for $15 at area sporting goods and hardware stores. This does not include a $6 "outdoor card" that fishermen now require. And be warned: Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers, in conjunction with police, will be on the lookout for offenders. Entrants are also advised to make sure the charter boat company is a member of the Ontario Charter Boat Association, which sets out certain criteria for its members to ensure customer safety and satisfaction. The cost of chartering a boat ranges between $60 and $75 per person for a sixâ€"hour period. The price includes fishing equipment, tackle and bait. It may be smart to book well in advance during the tournament. Not many people know that salmon are actuâ€" ally indigenous to Lake Ontario. But those are (or were) Atlantic Salmon, which gradually disâ€" appeared through by the 1960s due to "habitat degradation," Snowden said. Prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest rainbow and brown trout. Weekly contests will again be a Great Salmon Hunt mainstay. Eight such miniâ€"derbies offer 40 prizes every seven days for a total of $230,000. And somewhere in Lake Ontario is a specially â€" tagged salmon worth $100,000 to one lucky fishâ€" ermen. But before you‘re eligible for any of these prizes, you have to obtain an entry form at least one day before fishing. Much of this was caused by an influx of aleâ€" wives â€"â€"or "shiners"â€"â€" large scavenger minnows.
