Dear Oakville: When we arrived at Robinson Crusoe Island in the South Pacific off the coast of Chile, we had sailed more than 26,000 miles openâ€"our voyage to date, equivalent to the circumference of the world! The settlement on the island is tiny, with 400 people, one school, one post office, a bar, a graveyard, a soccer field and a couple of stores. The two main roads are both grass covered and there are a total of three cars on the entire island. Robinson Crusoe Island is a scenic paradise covered in lush green vegetation with beautiful flowering trees. The terrain is mountainous, similar to New Zealand and parts of British Columbia. For our shore leave and field trips here, the "groups of four‘ rule was waived. On Robinson Crusoe Island we were virtually free from the potential dangers for which we have been accustomed to taking precautions at most of our earlier ports of call. I really apprec1ated exploring this settlement by myself for a change. When you live in a confined area with 60 other people, no matter how much you enjoy them, it is marvelous to get away once in awhile. On our second day we left early in the morning and hiked up the mountain trail before splitting up for solos. Every 500 or so meters one of us would leave the trail and go into the woods, leaving a marker behind on the trail. Each of us chose an individual campsite and settled down for a day‘s solo reflection. Every couple of hours we would change our signal marker on the trail to let the Day Watch Officers know that we were all right. For me it was both an exciting adventure and an experience of great contentment. The following day our mountain hike got rained out and we left anchorage in the afternoon, setting sail for Easter Island. In a recent letter mailed to all beneficiaries of 1993 Town Grants, director of Finance and Treasurer A Proud Sponsor supporting Sarah on her voyage ‘\Rovai LePAGE]| Until next week, Advantage Michelle Seguin alluded to the Town‘s "new and unexpected finanâ€" cial challenges" and to reductions in provincial funding which will conâ€" tinue next year. Combined with the current economic climate, she said the Town‘s available resources for 1994 will be limited. "This may affect the amount of your 1994 funding," explained Seguin‘s letter. We encourage you to take actions to minimize your reliance on Town funding as your 1994 grant may be affected." Seguin explained that advance warning will be particularly helpful to minor hockey, for example, since fees for the 1993â€"94 season will be in place this fall. Seguin plans to report to Council in August on the current state of the Town‘s financial situation. The 1994 Budget Committee begins meeting in January and will report back to Council in February. While every Town department has been forced to reduce their budâ€" get each year, grants have been on a steady climb. Next year, says Seguin, will likely be different. "We all have to feel the pinch," she said.
