Surrounded by friends and neighbors, they settled down well withâ€" in the policeâ€"designated safety zone to enjoy the show. About 20 minutes into the display, a rocket shot skyward from Bronte Bluffs, but as the crowd craned their necks for the next detonation, nothing happened. "We waited and we waited but there was nothing but silence. Everyone was discussing it, saying it was a dud," said Theresa. "Then there was a sudden impact right beside us. There was no warning. Sand flew up into my face and in my mouth." â€" The spherical plastic device struck Clare‘s hand, however, burning her finâ€" gers. Theresa said she could feel the heat on her leg..In her lap was a four year old. "It was like somebody got a gigantic rock and a gigantic slingshot and threw it," said John. Around the shell was blackened sand and chunks of a burned substance that smelled like gunpowder. After calming a crying Clare, Theresa went to look for the police. Thinking back, she said any one of those people who were stretched out on the sand to watch the fireworks could have been struck full in the face. The family stuck around for the remainder of the show, but not without a little trepidation. "When a firecracker hesitated to go off we all hid behind our mom," said Clare. Theresa says the annual event is one that her family will take part in next year. The last thing she wants is to have it cancelled. She would, however, like the organizers to determine if there is safer spot to launch the fireworks. "We‘re looking forward to next year ... but we‘ll sit farther back," she said. "This year we got off very lucky."
