26/27th. To live within a mile of the lake during this festival is a misery. We had no parking restriction signs on our street, but even if we had, we would not have been protected from the kind of thing that hapâ€" pened to us. Last year we endured garbage strewn across our private property (not easement), pop cans, plastic cups, plastic bags, used Kleenex and even a used condom. Waterfront Festival organizers get some advice Dear Sir: My thanks to the public for the continuation of the open, factual communication we have both Mayor prepared to discuss issues with residents " OPINION In fact, the entire election campaign was based on this topic. The Progressive Conservatives under Robert Stanfield said some form of wage and price controls were needed to fight high interest rates and inflation. The Liberals‘ Pierre Trudeau made light of the move telling Canadians that if they voted in the Liberals, there would be no wage and price controls. History recounts how a grimâ€"faced Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau faced Canadians that he was forced to bring in wage and price controls because of the dire economic state of the nation. So much for the election. At least Stanfield told the truth. Only another election will see if Martin‘s comments come to pass. _ As for Martin and the Liberals‘ answer to our financial woes, he thinks the Grits will be able to turn things around by itemizing programs and detailing the jobs they will create. _ â€"Wl;e;\any politician utters this kind of nonsense, every one of us should grab hold of our pocketbooks. Politicians of every stripe have, at one time or another, advocated this kind of thinking and it never happens....never. â€" Some Canadians might remember a little number perpetrated by a former Liberal government called wage and price controls. How very strange it must seem then, for any Mack or exâ€"Mack worker, to see a full page color advertisement in the July issue of the Halton Business Journal, touting the company‘s commitment to its workers and the community. In Oakville last week for a Liberal Party of Canada fundraiser, Paul Martin, coâ€" chair of the party‘s national platform committee, said that while the country is in bad shape financially, when it comes to dealing with the deficit, "there‘s not much distinction between the parties." But Martin did have one thing right, the federal government and its provincial counterparts, have inundated business, particularly small business, with an avalanche of paperwork that serves only to guarantee bureaucrats‘ jobs in Ottawa. This is the usual stuff from the opposition benches and we can pass over these vague posturings. But one thing he said should make every taxpayer blanche. After announcing there would be new programs under a Liberal regime, Martin said no new tax funding would be needed for the programs since "any spending will be a reallocation of existing monies." tions. The ad in p;n reads: We commit to being good citizens, actively encouragâ€" ing and supporting employees‘ volunteer efforts in the communities in which we operate." h: ied Nice words, nice ad but a lousy decision to close the plant. As for the Mack workers? The ad is a collector‘s item. economy. Dear Sir: Being a frequent visitor to Oakville and a fisherman who has fished the Bronte Creek for 31 years, I would like to voice my appreciation to the people concerned at the Town of Oakville. The area under the Q.E.W. bridge on Bronte Road allows good access, parking, etc. for fishermen, nature lovers, etc. During the last 5 years there has been a dramatic increase of garbage, i.e. chesterfields, old T.V.‘s, stoves, fridges, tires, assorted household debris, etc. Kudos for town‘s creek cleanâ€"up Last year on the opposite side of the creek a load of plaster, paint cans, plastic jugs was deposited and the only way to get there with a vehicle was through the stream bed. Also noticed were two 4 x 4‘s travelling downstream. I recently revisited the area and the road is now blocked off by cement barriers, the mess down below was cleaned up. Dear Sir: Re: Waterfront Festival â€" June This year, late Saturday night, Thank you Oakville. Hugh McFarlane rom our ‘strange but true‘ file comes the following: In April of this year, Mack Canada Inc. the manufacturer of large trucks in Oakville, decided to close its North Service Road facility here in favor of their U.S. operaâ€" ith Prime Minister Kim Campbell in Japan attending the financial sumâ€" mit of G7 leaders, it‘s nice to know that back home, even some memâ€" bers of the opposition, admit there‘s not much that can be done about the And so it goes EDITORIAL Bad timing someone left the most vile mess right in front of our front door in amongst the hedges. They left soiled paper towels and clothing behind instead of taking it with them to stink up their own car. Sunday, before Church, we had to clean it up with a shovel and try to keep our 14 month old grandâ€" daughter away from it until we could get her in her car seat for Church. We are NOT PAID to be the 3) N refuse removers for the Town of one at I Oakville who charge $5.00 per perâ€" Bronte) son to attend this festival! I welcome the opportunity to clarify the following points: 1. The length of a federal elecâ€" tion campaign â€" it is a minimum of 47 days, down from 50 days. 2. As to my attendance at meetâ€" ings and attention to municipal business during the recent nominaâ€" tion, I did not miss a meeting due to the process. My calendar, as Mayor, remained full, with all matâ€" ters handled in the usual time frame. Dear Sir: Regarding Mr. Peter Dooly‘s letter in the Oakville Beaver dated July 2, 1993, why doesn‘t this gentleman stand for Councillor or Mayor in the next municipal election. We will then see what kind of neophyte he is. Frederick C. Duffey Letter writer should run for office 3. When did I become Mayor of PHIONE CALL845â€"5585 SPEAK YOUR MIND Got a gripe? Give us a call. Your memory is correct, I was sworn in December, 1988 â€"I did not serve on Council December, 1985 to November, 1988. I am a taxpayer who refused to clean up after a festival for which they charge admission. Arleen Reinsborough We are however delighted to be able to report to you that the greatâ€" est majority of our patients in the Town of Oakville, which has enjoyed an excellent and longâ€" standing relationship with its hosâ€" pital and medical community do not support your views. Dear Sir: We read with disappointment your rather vitriolic tirade against the medical profession in your ediâ€" torial of June the 18th. We feel it is unfortunate that you have characâ€" terized the medical profession as Government employees receiving exorbitant salaries, who are guaranâ€" teed an income. That these claims are patently untrue is obvious to any person with an interest in the Health Care system. 7) Those with boats were allowed to leave the docks but had to buy a button to return to their boats. They were not told this as they left the docks, so had no prior knowledge. 8) No milk for babies sold at the park, only pop. Is this just a big excuse for a noisy concert with the problems that come with it, or is it supposed to be a FAMILY festival. If it is the latter, the Town of Oakville has a long way to go to improve it! children except out on the wet grass in public. 5) Coronation Park was not clean enough for children and not enough for them to do. 6) Food was too expensive for Patients behind local physicians M.M. In future, we should insist that government follow the same practices as in the private sector and be totally financially accountable. At the moment, with so many oxes being gored in recognition of our Provincial deficit, we are seeâ€" ing more financial data come out of the woodwork and it, definitely, shows an inflated cost of government. Let‘s prove Barnum wrong for once and DEMAND real change! L.L. Davies Are our Regional Councillors going to give up the 2% (shades of our Senators) in recognition of the really tough times we are facing? Will they then, also, take a reduction in stipend to show the bureauâ€" cracy that, indeed, the ‘fat‘ has to be pruned? Somehow, I doubt it. Wasn‘t it Barnum who said a sucker was born every minute? Yet we have Mulvale running for bigger things while, at the same time, holding on to the title, stipend, and perqs as Mayor? Does anybody know of a position in the private sector that would allow this kind of behaviour? It is interesting to see the reactions to the NDP social contract efforts by the many groups affected. This reminds me that our Regional Councillors voted themselves a 2% raise in pay for 1993, and I was outraged by the comment from Fred Oliver to the effect that â€" nobody works without a regular raise in pay â€" but what would one expect from a person who has been a civil servant all their life? Dear Sir: A telephone call the other day informed me that teachers at Sheridan pay for their parking; a yearly sticker costing $201.25. Apparently, they belong to a different union from our Elementary/Secondary teachers. But the thought is there. If Sheridan teachers pay for parking, why not the others? Time to demand real change Bamum was right. We are all held in thrall by our political sysâ€" LETTER OF THE DAY WEEKLY FOCUS .
