Matthews had visited before and begun sending a collection of school materials on an individual basis. During her visit, she was invited to see the fruits of her labor. When Matthews saw how much further need there was in Jamaican classrooms, she went to Halton Roman Catholic School Board education director Cliff Byrnes upon her return home. It is a form of personal expresâ€" sion and the catalyst for social gathâ€" erings. Newspapers are chockâ€"full of pictures of local sport heroes and heroines, and we all know how the Jays are performing from one night to the next. *« Dance â€" summer ballet and jazz workshops for 6â€"12 yr. olds. The books were collected by all schools in the Halton Roman Catholic School Board between January and June. Their destination: Jamaica‘s Port Antonio school system. It all began in May 1992 when Mary Elien Matthews, a secretary at St. Peter‘s School in Milton made a return trip to Jamaica on her honeymoon. The shipping of the materials from Oakville to Pearson International Airport via Air Canada to Jamaica, is being handled by the Kiwanis Club of Port Antonio and the Fern Hill Club, Jamaica. J Long term benefits for children who take part in recreational sports Sport touches the lives of many people. It is enjoyed by young and old, gifted and challenged, girls, boys, women and men. Recreational sport programs are seen as an active and positive choice in a time when we are all faced with more and more difficult decisions. This is especially true for the youth in our community. Children and teens who participate in regular sport activities have immediate and long ferm benefits. These benefits include: higher levâ€" els of fitness; better health; social involvement; stress and tension reduction; increased selfâ€"esteem and selfâ€"confidence; and satisfacâ€" tion derived from developing new physical skills. Studies have shown that a positive experience in sport will turn children on to physical activity for life; increase academic focus and decrease the chances of smoking. The Oakville Parks and Recreation Department has recogâ€" nized the importance of sport and offers the following recreation proâ€" grams during the months of July and August. * Sports Activity Centre â€" a two week program for 10â€"16 year olds that offers a variety of activities such as rollerskating, racquetball, windsurfing, camping and golf. About 525 boxes or over 15 tons of materials are bound, secured and waiting word as to when their flight leaves for Jamaica. : * Tennis Lessons â€" two week lessons for all age groups (4â€"15 yrs.) at levels ranging from beginâ€" ner to intermediate. The saying goes "No more teachers, no more books..." but books are the operative word in a once vacant portable unit behind Rebecca Street‘s St. Dominic‘s Elementary School and St. Dominic‘s Church. * Canoeing â€" introduction into the trendy sport of canoeing and kayaking for ages 7â€"14. Burloak Canoe Club provides the certified instructors. Separate school board gives books to Jamaica * Golf â€" the fundamentals of golf for 8â€"16 year olds are taught by the pros at PGA Family Golf Centre. * Swimming Lessons â€" available for all age groups at both outdoor and indoor pools. If you are interested in registerâ€" ing your child(ren) in any of the above summer sport programs, 10 Burlington shops hit by burglars Businesses in downtown Burlington were victimized by thieves one night last month. Halton Police and Crime Stoppers would appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they may have informaâ€" tion that could lead to an arrest in the case. Three businesses were broken into, and entries were attempted at three more in the James and John Streets area of the downtown core. Cash was the soughtâ€"after item, leaving several doors and cabinets damaged during the search for it. Investigators feel it is â€"likely that these places were hit sometime between 10 p.m., June 8th; and 7:30 the following morning. If you have any information that leads to an arrest in this, or any other case, you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
