Anything below gets put on the back burner. Most of us homeowners can be described as reactive when it comes to maintenance, i.e. we respond to a crisis rather than take preventive action that would avert the crisis. I am by nature reactive, and rather than excuse my shortcomings by attributing it to human nature I try to reform rather than add to the chaos caused by "human nature" behavior. There are plenty of strict requirements for restaurant kitchens. There ought to be a law! Most domestic fires occur in the early evening when kitchens are most in use. According to my local fire pre- vention officer, at least 70 per cent of them could be easily controlled with a simple fire extinguisher. Moderate heat from an iron or a heat gun, or even a hair dryer, will soften a tile and the adhesive so that it can be pulled up. If working from underneath the floor is impractical, you can try a Band Aid solution by drilling small holes through the subfloor where the squeak is and squirting in some WD-40, an all-purpose lubricant, or some pow- dered graphite that is sold in small tubes to ease up sticky locks. If a carpet covers the floor you can carefully ease the finishing nails through the carpet and drive them in with a nail set. If tile covers the floor, remove a tile before nailing. irritate just about every member of the family, except the one whose job it will be to eliminate the noise. Impending golf or tennis dates seem to raise the frequency level of those squeaks well above the audible range of a handyperson's ear. It's a fairly common phenomenon. If the problem is caused by a warped joist that is pulling away from the subfloor, the best solution is to nail and screw a stinger alongside the joist so the stringer now supports the sub- floor. which can be nailed to it from above. It is best to do this if the movement is over a joist. If it is not then you would be wise to drive screws from underneath\ through the floor and halfway through the finished wood floor to pull it back securely against the subfloor.
