Andrus' relationship with Calgary soured because he backed John Gamble as the Don Valley West Reform candidate. The presence of Andrus. according to Dr. Somersall, then riding president Rita Bucher and Andrus himself, threat- ened to drive a deep wedge between Dr. Somersall said in an inter- view last week that he had mis- givings about bringing Andrus Calgary and Oakville-Milton. Faced with a choice between losing Calgary's support entirely in the election campaign or dropping Andrus, Dr. Somersall said he decided to quit instead. Andrus indicated that Dr. Somersall never displayed any qualms about hav- ing him take over the reins as campaign manager. in fact quite the opposite. Reform when he "did not leave will ingly," Carter added. Subsequent to that, a move devel- oped to have Andrus manage former Oakville-Milton candidate Allan Somersall's campaign. The Mississauga bated physician, in an interview last week, said he was ner- vous about the idea, but accepted it because the then members of his riding executive committee strongly endorsed the plan. Eventually the issue caused a rift that saw Somersall. as well as four members of the executive committee, including riding president Rita Bucher, resign. "He wanted to have his cake and eat it too, He wanted to have me, but he didn't want to offend his growing relationship with (Reform leader Preston) Manning. "l offered to step aside, to work qui- etly in the background," Andrus said. However, "Allan knew what the reality w'as. He could not have me and keep the west happy." Andrus was subsequently expelled from Reform in May. The friction between him and Calgary developed due to his activities in his home riding of Don Valley West, Andres said.
