Mayor Ann Mulvale explained Wednesday that the Memorandum of Understanding helps put the responsibility for developing local agreements back in the hands of local governâ€" ments and unions. To that end, she said the Town‘s management team and union représenâ€" tatives are working hard to meet the Aug. 1st deadline. "We want to have something worked out that is saleable to the unions and everyone else," said Mulvale. "It‘s good to be out from under the failsafe provisions." 8 * WWe want to have something +worked out that is saleable to the unions and everyone else." Ann Mulvale If ways are not found to cut costs â€" Oakville‘s share is $1.2 million â€" then workers‘ wages could be frozen for three years and they could be forced to take up to 12 unpaid days off each year. The NDP dropped their exempâ€" tion of those workers earning less than $30,000 as well as its demand for greater worker and union involvement on municipal committees. AMO president and Kirkland Lake mayor Joe Mavrinac said, "Municipal leaders were very concerned about the province‘s suggesâ€" tion that they should bargain away manageâ€" ment rights and municipal autonomy in exchange for better financial terms from the province. These concerns have now been largely redressed, while still preserving the commitment of municipal employers to involve all employees more fully in improving the productivity and costâ€"effectiveness of delivering municipal programs and services." Locally, Mulvale said negotiators are workâ€" ing through various scenarios in an effort to achieve the $1.2 million goal. At the moment she cannot divulge what these are but stressed that everything is being done to protect the essential services which the Town provides.
