Lybrand project A weekly series of letters home from Sarah Crothall, a Grade 12 student from Oakville currently spending 10 months aboard the S/Y Concordia visiting 40 ports of call on 4 continents! Dear Oakville: Early in the morning on the third day of our Easter Island land program, after sleeping the night in a cave at the base of the Rano Kau volcanic crater, we hiked to the quarry where centuries ago the islanders carved their giant moai statues. This® quarry has been recently uncovered by archaeologists and was fascinating. During the period of moai culture, the statues representing ancestors were carved larger and larger. The largest, 40 feet tall and 90 tons in weight, lies unfinished in the quarry. We saw many unfinished statues in the quarry. When the carvers came across a blemish in the stone, or when part of the statue cracked, they would just start another statue. The statues were carved right into the quarry face, and when the front of the moai was finished, the statues would be cut away from the rock to slide down the quarry face into pits so they could stand upright for the completion of the backs. We saw many statues left in this state, with soil piled up over the years leaving only the heads to show above the ground. From the. quarry, the completed statues would have been transported to the coast. There are many theories regarding the means of transportation. According to Peter, our guide, they were pulled with â€" ropes . into an upright position. At the coast they were stood on stone platforms called ahu, then their eyes | were carved from coral and placed in the eye sockets. The engineering which allowed them to transport these enormous stone moai weighing tons, must have been incredible. Motorists face higher insurance rates To this end Carr said his party offered a number of amendments to Bill 164 during hearings held earlier this year but none were accepted. The NDP then invoked closure and shut off debate on the issue. ' "It is unfortunate that they wouldn‘t listen. I think it was their intention all along to put so many restrictions on (insurance compaâ€" nies) that will drive them out of the province," explained Carr, who nnnnn Italian Specialties At Truly Modest Prices With Warm . _ Friendly Service 165 Cross Avenue, Oakville 842â€"1581 (Continued from page 1) said this would pave the way for public auto insurance which the NDP promised to introduce back in 1990. Spriggs agreed in part, saying there exists a "certain fear" within the industry which might result in business being driven away. Halton Centre Liberal MPP Barbara Sullivan doubted anyone would "pack up their bags and walk" and said she believed the insurance industry would take a responsible approach delivering the A Proud Sponsor supporting Sarah on her voyage Until next week, new â€" coverage package now required. Yet it is the average driver, says Sullivan, who will bear the brunt of "significantly higher" costs resultâ€" ing from Bill 164 â€" particularly at a time of "economic stress." This is the result of a combination of facâ€" tors in addition to the 4% directly attributable to Bill 164. She said these include the 5% sales tax on premiums introduced in the last NDP® budget as well as an average 8% rate hike approved this year for Investment Group Suite 505â€"710 Dorval Dr. Oakvnle (OTIS Building) 300 South Service Rd. Those looking for work are dependent on cars for their job search, Sullivan said, while those who are employed will find: it increasingly difficult to pay their bills. She added that the sections of the bill which expand coverage will simply drive up the cost of premiums. "It is the wrong legislation at the wrong time," Sullivan continâ€" ued. "People are suffering everyâ€" where." Catherine Newell, director of Public and Government Affairs for the Hamilton Automobile Club â€" which also attended the hearings â€" said her organization is in favor of some changes contained in the legâ€" islation. This includes the increase in the maximum benefits paid to accidents victims for lost income from $600 a week (nonâ€"indexed to inflation) to $1,000, indexed. This is balanced, however, by government restrictions regarding who can and. cannot take legal action. (In the midâ€"1980‘s the Ontario Liberals brought in a noâ€" fault system which eliminated 95% of lawsuits.) Bill 164 allows vicâ€" tims to sue for pain and suffering, subject to a $10,000 deductible, but removes the right for the worstâ€" injured victims to sue for lost future income. Roy Spriggs said the hybrid creâ€" ated by combining the old and new systems will take time to sort out. Once the dust settles everyone involved will have a better idea what the impact of Bill 164 really 18. "The combination hasn‘t been tested yet," he said.
