By BARB JOY Oakville Beaver Staff As of Friday, though, he was still thinking about the implications of the contest. On that day, he contacted a lawyer who told him the lotto contest idea was a legal one, as far as he could see. However, Sobolewski said he will have to pay GST on the sale and whoever gets the cafe would have to pay any legal costs attached to the purchase. Essay contest winner gets to own local cafe n Oakville businessman is working out the details of a a conâ€" Atest that will award the winner a cafe in Trafalgar Village Mall â€" for $60. Leslie Sobolewski and his wife, Lai Ping, are coâ€"owners of the mall‘s Kelly‘s Cafe. They are looking for 1,000 entrants to enter an essay contest with the prize being the cafe itself. Each entrant submits a typed, doubleâ€"spaced 200â€"word essay on why he or she wants the business, along with a certified cheque for $60, and submits both to the cafe. Independent judges â€" probably English teachers he doesn‘t know â€" will pick out the winner of the most interesting essay. And the winner gets the cafe. Sobolewski figures that if 1,000 entrants pay $60 each, he‘ll garner $60,000, enough for him to let the cafe go. But he‘ll stick around long enough to help the new owner get established. He emphasized accurate records would be kept and all transactions listed. The certified cheques would be kept in a safe and, should the goal of 900 to 1,000 entrants not be reached, they would be returned. "I‘ll go with either 1,000 or the last day of the year, but I should know within two months if people are interested," he said. "If there is only little interest, the whole idea will be abandonned." He still has to make out an application form for contest entrants and wondered if he should include any stipulation that only residents of Canada should apply. Sobolewski and Ping acquired the cafe two years ago after Sobolewski lost his engineering job. He and his wife take daily turnâ€" abouts with the Monday to Friday 12â€"hour shifts (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays) but, with three small children, it is becoming increasingly difficult, he said. Although the cafe affords his family a living, he wants to return to his engineering work which he now does to some degree on a freelance basis. At the same time, he will miss the friendly people who take up the six stools and two tables at the corner cafe. He said about threeâ€"quarâ€" ters of the mall‘s customers are also his customers. Over the 12 years since the mall opened, they have become accustomed to stopping at Kelly‘s for a bite to eat or a coffee during their shopping excursions. "I would think anyone interested would come and look at the place first," he said. Sobolewski said he got the idea for the lotto essay from a radio report of an American couple who advertised their business in the same way. They received over 3,000 replies at $300 each. For more information on the cafe essay contest, contact Leslic Sobolewski at Kelly‘s Cafe, 125 Cross Ave., Oakville, Ont. L6J 2W8. "I think I‘m breaking ground here," he said. "I believe many people will copy this kind of thing." Aug. 11, 1993 Owner says shop will be prize but only if 1,000 enter contest Go Buggy at Bronte!! Sat.
