By KATHY YANCHUS Oakville Beaver Staff Artist Debi Johnson‘s ‘canvases‘ hang in closets around the world. Johnson‘s art is the wearable kind and her trademark shirts which are painted, motified and/or appliqued have catapulted her reputation as a fashion designer into international fashion circles. She has already captivated Canadian consumers with her beautifully handâ€"paintâ€" ed clothing, available in 18 retails outlets across the country including the prestiâ€" gious Design Zone at Harbourfront‘s Queen‘s Quay, a shopping area devoted exclusively to Canadian designers. Life for the attractive former and curâ€" rent Oakville resident is hectic as she travâ€" els the world in search of everâ€"changing fashion trends while operating her flagship retail outlet on Thomas Street and designâ€" ing into the wee hours of the morning. Works of HArt, not hard to pinpoint with its pink awnings outstretched in the summer sun â€" is comfortable but classy servicing a "middle to upper clientele" in the 30â€"plus age group. A tiny insignificant structure behind the store is her fashion think tank, cluttered with works in progress, raw materials and racks of "whims". She can‘t break the momentum because the demand is so great. She designs the garments and does the pattern making while three seamstresses carry out the proâ€" duction. A shipment is sent to the three outlets on the west coast every other day. "Life is pretty hairy but I‘m a nighthawk," says Johnson of the late hours she keeps . "This is my peacetime." Every piece is handâ€"designed and not massâ€"produced. "I may do a maximum of six to 12 pieces (of the same thing)," says Johnson. «No one else does the art work (as well as k the design) and I think that‘s what has Fashion de: made me unique." Thomas St Casual with a definite sense of style and elegance is Johnson‘s look with pearls and lace and swatches of denim her trademarks.
