It will be Maxwell‘s first appearâ€" ance at the World‘s. "I feel really excited actually," the Queen Elizabeth Park graduate said. "It‘s been a long time coming for me." While Maxwell is happy about "I was better than he was," Maxwell said. "I had beaten Glen headâ€"toâ€"head four times in Câ€"1 events (before Olympics). They took five guys to the Olympics last year even though I was third (in Câ€"1 1,000m at last year‘s nationals). He was just the best left. "It was the experience I needed. My goal is to win a medal in the ©96 Games (Atlanta). If I had been there I would have known what to expect. I have to start making the world team like I have this year. I just didn‘t want to jump on the scene in 309 ©96 and say ‘here I am‘. going to Denmark, the bitter memoâ€" ries of being left off the Canadian Olympic team for the ©92 Summer Games in Barcelona last year still linger. He missed going as an alterâ€" nate for Câ€"2 by only position and only because he happened to be a right side paddler. The team needed a leftâ€"sider and chose Glen Girard. NO REASON "They â€"(Canadian Canoe Association) never gave me a real good reason. It was a big deal then because it‘s everyone‘s goal as an athlete to go. I can‘t really hold resentments anymore but in the same way I still feel I should have gone." Maxwell made the team this time around by being the fourthâ€"best point getter at the Canadian national championships last weekend in Ottawa. The nationals served as triâ€" als for the World team. In the process Maxwell beat out Dan Howe, another rightâ€"handed paddler, who was part of the winâ€" ning Canadian Câ€"4 1,000m boat with Cain, Frost and Giles at an international regatta in Duisburg, Germany earlier this year. Maxwell beat Howe by four seconds in the See our Classified section Câ€"1 1,000m race at nationals. "They didn‘t expect to win the Câ€"4 (in Duisburg)," Maxwell said. "That was a big surprise because we‘ve never raced it before. We‘re not good in it and all of a sudden we put four guys together and they did really well. "When I find out they won I knew my chances (for making World team) were good. They wouldn‘t take Dan just because he won it the first time." Maxwell is just glad to see the breaks starting to go his way so he‘s trying to bury the past. "I‘m where I want to be now," explained the McMaster University student who‘s majoring in physical education. "The way I look it is you have to pay your dues to a certain extent. Larry, Dave and Stevie get the benâ€" efit of the doubt over young kids coming up. It comes to a point where you have to get in with the plans. Now I think I‘ve broken through that. "It‘s just been bad luck. Actually I‘ve been pretty consistent the last two years. "For a couple of years I‘d be good and then I‘d be inconsistent with my results. It was hard for them to be confident with me. Now they‘ve seen that I have the potenâ€" tial. I had to learn how to paddle and get my head together." If you‘re steering a lot then you‘re obviously not going to be in good rhythm." While Cain is the one blessed with the experience, Maxwell feels each member has merit in the boat. "We‘re all green in the Câ€"4 because they‘ve only come out with his boat in the last three or four years," he explained. Still Cain commands Maxwell‘s respect. He got into the paddling game in 1984 â€" the year Cain came home from the Los Angeles Summer Olympics with gold and silver medals. "It‘s kind of neat because now I‘m in the same boat as him. He‘s the reason I‘m where I am today. I‘ve always chased him up and down the creek (Sixteen Mile), always looked to him."
