Although we had three more ports to o, we all felt so much closer to home. We stopped alfway up the coast of Mexico at Puerto Vallarta. On our first day of shore leave, all the students rushed out for telephone, fax, and fast food. We hadn‘t been able to do these things in either of our last two ports, which were both well off the beaten track. Puerto Vallarta was a very hectic port. Everyone was busy studying for and writing final exams, shopping for last minute presents before we hit the United States, and finishing off assignments. Mexico was extremely hot. The port was very touristy. There were restaurants and cafes all along the beach where we ate dinner while watching the sun set over the ocean . I almost felt as though I was on vacation, except for my exams! On our second last day, we toured the coast on a trimaran sailing boat. It was quite different to the Concordia. We stopped at several different places for snorkeling. Although we saw coral and many tropical fish, this snorkling paled in comparison with Galapagos and its natural beauty unspoiled by tourism. We stopped for lunch at a beach further down the coast, where we were swamped by jewellery vendors. The next day, after stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables, we set sail for San Diego. Until next week, TB cases could be reduced with clean needlesâ€"MOH Nosal said several communities have successfully implemented the needle exchange programs, including Guelph, Niagara Region, Hamilton, Toronto, and Peterborough. Currently in Halton, pharmacists only sell sterâ€" ile needles and syringes to individuâ€" als who have demonstrated a medical need, such as diabetics. (Continued from page 1) and syringes, and needle bleach kits, through local pharmacists to intraâ€" venous drug users, Nosal said. However, the bleach solution is effective when used properly, stressed Nosal. gram would also focus on educating intravenous drug users about the proper way to use bleach kits â€" which are basically plastic bags containing a small bottle of bleach and a bottle of sterile water used to sterilize needles and syringes. The campaign would also attempt The staff at Royal Bank wish Sarah all the best on her exciting and educational voyage. The possibility that the distribuâ€" tion of needles could further drug abuse is of concern to committee chairman, Ralph Scholtens, a Burlington regional councillor. "I appreciate that AIDS is a probâ€" lem," Scholtens said. "But by the same token, I have difficulty in givâ€" ing tax dollars in aiding a program which helps people to inject themâ€" selves with illegal substances. to allay "unfounded" public concerns that needle exchange programs proâ€" mote drug use, he said. for 1993 Oakville, Burlington the Investment Group Suite 505â€"710 Dorval Dr. Oakville (OTIS Building) Wishing you smooth sailing throughout your travels A Proud Sponsor supporting rah on her voyage Start Your cablenet 570 TRAFALGAR RD Providin Cabl e F Service to "We‘re using tremendous amounts of manpower and money to fight drugs. I‘d like to see us take the money out of drugs and use it in other areas," he said. Mulvale said she believes the war against drugs has been useful because it has helped individuals lead normal lives again through drug prevention and rehabilitation programs. She said the community also has a responsibility to protect "the unusing partner" of an intravenous drug user who may contract HIV. Mulvale said there‘s no distinction between HIV sufferers who have contracted the virus "either from sex or drug abuse." Mulvale conceded, however, the public‘s perception will be that the region‘s adoption of the needle exchange program "will seemingly support drug users." "T‘ll support it because of the innocents who will get caught up in this," Burlington councillor Bob Brechin said. Brechin said he believes society "is losing the war on drugs." The committee directed Nosal to approach local pharmacists about the feasibility of implementing the neeâ€" dle exchange program and to report back on the success of those discusâ€" sions within six months. Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale called Scholten‘s comments "someâ€" what extreme". "My initial concern is that I don‘t want to be involved in dispensing drugs. If we‘re in the business of handing out tools for the dispensing of drugs, that‘s as immoral as disâ€" pensing the drugs themselves.
