That‘s when the Grade 9 stuâ€" dents at the Rebecca Street camâ€" pus can come home to school. "During the fall term, the ground floor will be finished," he said. "Originally, we were scheduled to have the work completed by the end of January but we‘re ahead of schedule so it will probably be the end of the year." Corbacio said the second and third floors of the school should be completed by the time some 1,030 students are ready to return on Sept. 8th. Besides updating the air sysâ€" tem, he said energyâ€"efficient lighting was installed and added insulation in the roof and replacement of leaky windows should cut down on electrical bills. Although the original 120,000 square foot school was built in the midâ€"1960s, it was structurally sound, he noted. However, bringing it up to today‘s building code standards provided a challenge. "The old hallways floors were terrazzo and in good conâ€" dition so we didn‘t have to replace them," said Corbacio. "But we modernized the cafeteâ€" ria and kitchen and spruced up the administration area. And we turned the old technical area into academic space." But from the time they step inside the sprucedâ€"up entrance, they are bound to notice silver, white and bright blue colors on the walls, new lockers in the hallways and classrooms with new ceilings, floors and desks. These students won‘t find much different on the outside of the school. If they‘re very observant, though, they might notice a new roof, new windows that someone might tell them are energyâ€"efficient and an enlarged parking lot to accomâ€" modate more cars for students. The extensive renovations have taken place over the past 18 months, he said. During that time, Grade 9 students have been attending St. Thomas Aquinas‘s other campus on Rebecca Street and so will this year‘s crop of Grade 9 students. Once renovations are complete, probably at the end of the year, they‘ll then move to the Margaret Drive campus. "It looks like a brand new school inside," said Giacomo Corbacio, controller of building and plant for all of Halton‘s Catholic schools. The Roman Catholic School Board, which took over Perdue in 1990 and named it St. Thomasâ€" Aquinas, is spending close to $10 million on interior fixings. The old G.E.Perdue High School will soon be new again.
