In the case of the Espanola tortoise, the population had been reduced to only two males and twelve females. These animals were so dispersed on their island that the males and females never met. They were brought to the Darwin Station and to date nearly 300 Espanola tortoises from the highly successful rearing program have been returned to their native island. At the station we saw the tortoises in their various stages of development, from tiny hatchlings to four year olds. We also saw the adult male called "Lonesome George". He was named this because sadly he is the only one left of his particular subâ€"species. In another area of the station, called the Macho Corale there were eight adult male tortoises which we were able to observe up close. We watched them bathing, eating and snoozing. We were told that they were harmless, but were wamed that they had been known to run over visitors. I found this hard to believe because they moved so slowly, until I was crawling under the bushes with one of these immense animals to get closeâ€"up photographs. I was crouched under a bush right in front of a very large tortoise (see photograph) and there wasn‘t much room to move. When this animal who weighed more than 200 kg headed purposefully right for me, I didn‘t question as to whether he would stop but got out of there as fast as I could, and narrowly missed being run over. The giant tortoises lay their eggs in nests of 2â€"16 eggs. The eggs incubate for 4â€"6 months. The hatchlings then take about a month to dig their way out. They reach maturity after about 20 to 30 years. These giant reptiles can live to be well over 50 years. Adult tortoises weigh up to 220 kg. There are 14 separate subâ€"species of the Giant Tortoise, three of which are already extinct. The Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands has established a rearing program in an effort to help the endangered tortoise population. "The names of those people who have been charged are public knowlâ€" edge. You can get (the information) at the police station. "I don‘t want to heighten the fear to the public more than its been heightâ€" ened. We have a process in place and we‘ve been following that process. "The next meeting is at the end of, the month. We‘re dealing with a diseasd here," Scholtens objected. Oakville regional councillor Kevin Flynn, however, felt Scholtens had overstated his case. "Nosal has said his hands are tied, but that doesn‘t alleviate the communiâ€" ty‘s concerns," Scholtens said. 20 SESSIONS BRING A FRIEND GET 40 SESSIONS FOR $375.00 * interior exterior painting * Wallpaper hanging * Ceramic tile installation * Framing drywall Painting Decorating welcome all her clients to come and see her at her new locafion.
