The juried show was the brainâ€" storm of local master weaver Christel Wille who over her 24 years in Oakville had always marvelled at the number of people in town who worked in fibres. Why don‘t the local fibre groups work more closely together, she often wondered. But first things first. She approached OAC administrator Janet Miller to discuss a joint exhibit and the result is Celebration of Craft 93, an arts ‘event‘ which will be staged every two years, and with contemporary works alongâ€" The show is unusual in that it disâ€" plays traditional work along with conâ€" temporary pieces; most current exhibiâ€" tions show only contemporary work because it is thought to be more creâ€" ative. The show features both traditional and contemporary works and all entries were juried by proposal which involves the submission of a proposal which describes the piece, its origin, the source of its inspiration, its materiâ€" als and a visual interpretation. opportunities for fibre and textile artists to participate in five different guilds: Oakville Handweavers and Spinners, Halton Quilter‘s Guild, Oakville Stitchery Guild, Oakville Rug Hooking Guild and Trillium Smockers. The OACâ€"sponsored workshop will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Oakville Room at Town Hall. In addition, Hodge, who has taught at the Ontario College of Art since 1967 and whose work spans all areas of the fibre arts, will jury proposals for a sixâ€"month Art Works exhibition at O‘Connor MacLeod in 1995. In the meantime, Wille is pleased that a celebration of Oakville crafts has come to fruition because "Oakville has had nothing like that at all," with fibre artists having to go outâ€" ofâ€"town to exhibit their work. As with any debut event, there are wrinkles to be ironed out and Wille says next time, there will be more emphasis on public education. "People don‘t know how to react to fibre artwork," she says, explaining that to many, crafts are not art. side traditional, something that is very important to Wille because without the traditional techniques, there would be no contemporary work.
