(KiDs Are SHoppErs Too!) KOAAOSOTO 4 6 ¢ Oakville has region‘s highest residential water consumption at 590 litres per day According to a 1991 report preâ€" pared for the Region of Halton by James E. Robinson Associates, the Town of Oakville had the highâ€" est per capita residential water conâ€" sumption in Halton at 590 litres per day. This is nearly 1.7 times the Canadian average of 350 litres per day and exceeds the waterâ€"guzzling Americans (who lead the world at 426 litres per day) by more than 1.3 times. Our water bills may seem high (look at the bottom of your Hydro bill to see your consumption and costs) but we pay, on average, 1/4 of the European domestic and industrial price and about 1/2 the American price. This low cost, along with the perception that water is plentiful, encourages waste. In fact, only 1% of all water on the planet is fresh, and 99% of this is locked up in the polar ice caps. That doesn‘t leave much water to waste. Compared to the European averâ€" age of 140 litres per day, we use more than four times as much water. We use 40% of our water for toilet flushing, 35% for showers and baths, 20% for laundry and 5% for drinking and cooking. This is just indoor use. In the summer lawn watering and car washing increases The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology Human Rights is bent on installing "toilet watersaver tanks dams" in every residential and commercial toilet in Oakville. Spokesperson, Eric Jensen, says Oakville residents can conserve water and money at the same time. The average toilet uses 22 litres of water every time it‘s flushed, he said, and the watersaver saves about 10 litres. There‘s a place that‘s out to get you from flushing your money down the toilet along with the water. "In a household of four persons each flushmg four times a day, you will save close to 40 cents a week or $19.60 a year. At $15 each, the Centre has a few hundred of the units left after selling "quite a few." For more information, call the centre at 849â€"5501. LAppear in our newsletter! our use by 50% to 100% again We hear that Halton is a Worldâ€" Class Place To Be, but being among the world‘s greatest users of water is not a fact which is routinely trumpeted by local politicians. GOLDEN RULES The three golden rules of water use are reduce, repair, and retrofit. Reducing our water use doubles our savings because we pay twice â€" once coming in for water and again going out for wastewater. The money saved from water conservaâ€" tion is not small potatoes â€" the Region of Waterloo is engaged in a program of systematically replacing conventional toilets with lowâ€"flush ones. They estimate that every dolâ€" lar invested in new lowâ€"flush toilets will save $40 in future water and sewage construction costs. This is not rocket science, either. Reduction does not require engiâ€" neers, planners, expropriation of land, construction contractors or lengthy environmental assessment hearings. It only requires basic knowledge and a desire to save money. Here are some reduction tips: 1) The Robinson Associates report specifies "The principal explanation for the high waterâ€"use per capita in Oakville is considered to be the irrigation of new sod." If your selfâ€"esteem depends on a lush, perfect lawn in August you have much bigger problems than this colâ€" umn can solve. Overseed with droughtâ€"resistant turfgrass varieties such as fescues. Water your garden with drip irrigation, not an overhead sprinkler. 2) Reduce the water your toilet uses â€" the largest waster in your home â€" by adjusting the float ball or putting a plastic bottle (Quick, Maude, raid the recycle!) or plastic bag filled with water in the tank. A toilet will work perfectly well on 1/4 as much water as the tank norâ€" mally holds. Never use bricks in your tank, they can disintegrate and harm your system. Toilet dams to reduce your toilet‘s thirst can also be purchased at the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology Human Rights at 849â€" 5501.They will pay for themselves in less than a year in water savings. 4) Keep a jug of water in the fridge so you can break the habit of running the tap until the water gets cold. 3) Never leave the water running while shaving, brushing teeth, washing, cleaning vegetables or rinsing dishes. 6) Run dishwashers and washing machines for full loads only selectâ€" ing the shortest cycle (and the coolest water for laundry). 7) Take short showers, not baths. If bathing, put the drain plug in right away rather than waiting until 5) Steam, not boil, vegetables then let the water cool and use it for watering plants. $50.00 per class. Repair leaking faucets and toi: lets. A tap, leaking at the rate of one drop per second wastes 10,000 litres per year. A toilet that continues to run after flushing could fill a swimâ€" ming pool in a year. Put some food coloring in the toilet tank â€" if you see color in the bow!l after 15 minâ€" utes you have a leak. Check for a bad seal between the flush of flap- per vale and the valve seat. Retrofit with lowâ€"flow showerâ€" heads, water efficient faucet aerdâ€" tors, low flush toilets, water heater covers, and hot water pipe insulaâ€" tion. These inexpensive improveâ€" ments typically pay for themselves in lower water bills within a year or two. With a few simple techâ€" niques we can still be clean, saniâ€" tary, and have our thirsts quenched with no loss of quality of life.
