With a 1993 Inglis model, you would spend about $65 a year on electricity. In 10 years, the older refrigerator would use $1,790 worth of hydro versus $650 for the newer model. That‘s a $1,100 differâ€" ence. If you have an older refrigerator, compare how much it‘s costing you to operate with the cost of running a newer, more energyâ€"efficient model. Just multiply the total number of kiloâ€" watt hours (kWh) used by each refrigâ€" erator in a year by the hourly hydro cost. The EnerGuide label on new appliances indicates the kWh rating of modern refrigerators, but you may have to approximate the energy conâ€" sumption of your old unit. Considering a typical new refrigeraâ€" tor costs approximately $900 to $1,000 and lasts from 15 to 20 years, it may make good financial and environmenâ€" tal sense to look at replacing your older unit.
