While the Sauvignon is predominantâ€" ly from the Bordeaux Region of France, the Burgundy area to the east and slightly to the north, produces its own distint variety, that of the Pinot Blanc. It is this variety, one that is now grown worldwide, that I would like to cover here. There can be no doubt that the cultivation of grapes in the Burgundy began during the Roman period, and perhaps even before. Yet the first mention we can find of the Pinot Blanc, the most important white wine varieites, EBERSPAECHER of the Burgundy, dates back only as far as the 14th century. Although one cannot be certain how it all came about, we do know that it all began in the region. Today, as is the case with so manyother wines, the Pinot Blane is no longer confined to France and one can find some super wines from some very unlikely countries. Pinot Blane can accompany most meals Weissburgunder in Germany has been one of the increasing varieites, while my Hungarian friends call it a Feherâ€"burgundi and the Yugoslavian growers used to know it as the Biela Klevajka. Canadian producers, especially those in Ontario, have been very sucâ€" cessful in growing the grape and one winery, Konzelmann, has recently won the highest awards for his reguâ€" lar listed Pinot Blanc over many difâ€" ferent varieties internationally. During ordinary vintage years, a Pinot Blanc is rather mild and neutral with very little aging possibilities, a reasonably good dinner wine. In good vintage years, such a wine will have an outstanding acidity and fruit balance that will permit years of aging under the right conditions. Outstanding vintages produce some of the greatest wines and few who have ever tried someâ€"of the betâ€" ter Chabli, Meursault and Montrachet wines will disagree with me here. As with most white wines, Pinot Blanc wines are marketed rather young but usually ready to drink. I suspect that most Pinot Blanes at the regular wine store presently are perâ€" haps not older than 1990, a pretty good year in most areas. A good Pinot Blanc is great to be drank cool on its own, but can also be recommended to accompany most meals. Exceptions to this would be if they are very spicy orperhaps BBQ meats in which case the wine would be somewhat overpowered by the food. FROM THE WINE CELLAR One of the best domestic white wines is the Pinot Blanc from Konzelmann. A regular listing under CSPC 219279 at $8.60, I can recomâ€" mend it highly. From France, the Chablis from Jaffelin at $18.75 under CSPC 53868, is rather upscale but good. From Italy, I suggest what I believe to be a Pinot Blanc, the Pinot Bianco from Fontanafredda that can be found under CSPC 63628 for about $9.65.
