eng 196 one 105 Fourth generation Camaro introduces racier new look By JIM ROBINSON Oakville Beaver Staff ; hevy‘s fourth generation ‘ _ Camaro has been a long time + coming â€" the question is, has it been worth the wait? Think Camaro and you think big engines and big speed. The initial 1967 version could be kitted out as one step removed from a racecar in 295 hp/Z28 form. In 1970 there was a 360 hp Camaro no less. The "Fuel Crisis" has come and gone and big power is available again. Today you can buy the 1993 Z28 with 275 hp and 325 fi/lbs of torque mated to a sixâ€"speed transmission, potent road machinery no matter what the decade. But I‘m sure most opting for somethin affordable, less powerf strain on your credulity But I‘m sure most people will be opting for something a little more affordable, less powerful, and less of & strain on your credulity when the insurâ€" ance man gives you a quote on a 228. Besides the allâ€"powerful Z28 is the Camaro Coupe available with a fiveâ€" speed manual transmission or fourâ€" speed automatic with torque converter clutch. Both cars are front engined anc rear drive. Instead of a fireâ€"breathing gulping monster mill, the sts coupe comes with a 3.4â€"litre V6 traces its lineage back to the 2 3.1â€"litre V6s, mainstays of breadâ€"andâ€"butter fleet. With seq fuel injection the engine gives and 200 ft/lb of torque. Tra Canada claims ther V6 de The base price of the coupe is $15,998 and you get a ton of extras included. Driver and passenger get air bags and antiâ€"lock brakes come stanâ€" dard. There‘s a stainless steel exhaust, the frtemorâ€"isâ€"Scothgarded, steering is power, so is the braking, plus you get Chevy‘s roadside assistance package. There‘s even a sculptedâ€"in rear spoiler standard as well as an AM/FM cassette with search. Asked _ to _ provide _ an everyman‘s/woman‘s Camaro with some "normal" options, GM‘s mediaâ€" man, Chris Douglas, produced this week‘s test car in glistening black. It had GM‘s "1SC" option group ($2,214) which included air, power windows with driver‘s express down, power locks, electric remote mirrors, cruise control, power hatch, leather steering wheel and fog lamps. To that he added $635 for the automatic transâ€" mission and $490 for the optional 16â€" inch cast aluminum wheels and wide P235/55R allâ€"season tires. The addition of $3,339 in options brought the price of the Coupe to $19,437 or $20,012 if you include the $575 destination charge. The first impression of the new Camaro is, of course, the shape. Nowhere is it more striking than headâ€" on. Painted black, the Coupe is like a broad, menacing arrowhead. From inside, the hood drops immediately out of forward sight. Looking in the remote mirrors, the muscled haunches builge into the line of sight, but not obtrusively. The Coupe comes with power discs at front, drums at the rear. The front suspension is Chevrolet‘s new shortâ€" long independent system. The rear uses a Salisbury/multiâ€"link design with trailâ€" ing arms, track bars and torque arm. The V6/automatic is not the powerâ€" house LT1 V8 of the Z28, but it does have guts and a nice sound. One thing I did notice was the desire of the Coupe to keep rolling along even with the foot off the gas. At 50 kmh in overdrive, lift the right foot and it would cruise sweetly along at 50 unabated until it came time to obey a traffic light. With this forward motion, the power brakes were a blessing and one needed good calf muscles to slow the car down. I was told this was a computer/fuel glitch which would have been rectified when the car was PDI‘d before delivâ€" Throughout my week with the car, I noticed many people watching as it went by. Park it at a convenience store and people stopped to ask questions. This is a good sign. Many of the body sections, incidentally are of a polymer composite and that means zero rust. Instrumentation is analog and simâ€" ple to understand at a glance. Heating/cooling/air was three rotary knobs, again workable by anyone. Oh! there is a usable backseat, big enough for my son in his carseat and for one of our writers when three of use went out to lunch. 1993 Chevrolet Camaro hing, fuel e standarc e V6 whict the 2.8 anc .. & ~ Cl tie more ] less of a the insurâ€" n a 228 728 is the th a fiveâ€" i or fourâ€" converter gined and ing, fuel standard V6 which o paaaa e 2.8 and * of GM‘s a sequential youer» es 160 hp l ui M“’M : o s [ransport m > delivers '________q_-â€"-â€"â€"'_'-" Psll f j T L/37 mpg + r=â€" io t ; .\ % ‘fi‘ coupe is wm f of extras L «s . * a t =***0r LLKL} of GM‘s sequential es 160 hp [ransport aversion to road irregularities which made the last Camaro feel like a handâ€" ful after the shocks lost their newness. Similarly, the multiâ€"link rear suspenâ€" sion is more supple and doesn‘t hop around when it gets upset by ripples in the road. This should be a much better car in the winter particularly with four snow tires fitted. In terms of price, the Coupe certainâ€" ly appeals, but it is somehow a very honest car. What I didn‘t feel was & ness" in the front suspension Pleasant and predictable in its road manners, it is also very pleasant to look at and it should be longâ€"lived and dependable, GM having made great strides in this area in the past decade.
