Roomy midâ€"size car is full of surprises Toyota went to great lengths to reduce noise, vibration and harshâ€" ness (NVH) using the same asphalt/steel sandwich pioneered in the Lexus line. Much attention went into exterior styling to improve airâ€" flow including double weatherstripâ€" ping, flush headlamps and door hanâ€" dles and very annro body gaps. Available as a fourâ€"door sedan and fiveâ€"door wagon, only the LE model sedan is built in Ontario. Standard engine on this frontâ€" engine/front drive car is a 1.8â€"litre, 115 hp, twinâ€"cam, fourâ€"cylinder with 16 valves employing a fourâ€"speed electronic overdrive automatic or a fiveâ€"speed overdrive manual. Base engine is a 1.6â€"litre fourâ€"cylinder producing 105 hp and only has a threeâ€"speed automatic or fiveâ€"speed manual. The 192 Corolla LE is slightly bigger in all areas than the previous version but in terms of style, it is bears a strong family resemblance to the Camry and entry level Tercel. The trunk now holds 12.7 cu. ft. of cargo and the trunk lid opens to almost 90 degrees which really helps in loading. The Corolla LE now comes with P185/65R14 Michelin tires. originalâ€" ly P175s were fitted to Canadian market cars, but that was scrubbed, and the buyer is the winner as even a slightly wider tire improves ride and handling particularly on a smaller vehicle. Doors are nice and wide and open into a passenger compartment where a lot of work has been done to create as much useable space as possible. The plastics, has I‘ve said before on these pages, are of the highest qualiâ€" ty and should be the industry benchâ€" mark. Seats are typical Toyota feelâ€" ing initially firm but proving quite W F names Chev Lumina, Ford Tempo and Crown Victoria, and _ Chrysler‘s _ evergreen Magicwagons spring to mind. But in a multiâ€"national world where trade barriers have blurred borders, Ontario also produces Suzukis, Hondas, and at Cambridge, the Corolla, now in its seventh genâ€" eration and closing in on VW as the greatest volume production car of all time. Today‘s Cambridgeâ€"built Corolla comes with standard equipment not even dreamed of 26 years ago like driver‘s side air bag, adjustable shoulder belt anchors, tilt steering wheels, headlamp auto off system and variable assists power steering. Antiâ€"lock brakes are also an option of all models. Today‘s Corolla is a long way removed from those little fourâ€"door sedans (which almost always painted in Robin‘s Egg Blue) which went on sale here 26 years ago. Temperature and gasoline are the other two, secondary gauges, the rest being left to blackâ€" out warnings. As is always the case, the shifter is light and an angel food cake, the clutch requiring little effort while being taut and progressive in its uptake, even under load. The optional cruise control knob is mounted BMWâ€"like on the steering wheel boss and like the Bimmer is simplicity itself to use. Also fitted was the optional twoâ€" way power roof and air conditioning. The air, in particular, proved easy to modulate during the midâ€"August heat and humidity. I was primarily interested in how well put together this car would be, and I did take some time to go over how it had been screwed together. The interior was faultless as was the operation of controls and their "feel‘. On the outside there a small gap between two pieces of weatherstripâ€" ping, but that was all. Being a Toyota, a lot of work was spend on concealing metal screws. A little thing like that makes a car feel much more luxurious. There was a wind whistle, soundâ€" ing like a muted calliope at 120 kmh, but nothing untoward. I came to think of the noise as a warning to get back down the the 100 kmh limit. On the highway the J.8â€"litre.sim: ply purred along with plenty of passâ€" ing power when needed. Fifth really is for overdrive cruising, the other four gears (my tester was the five speed) being spaced closer together. Brakes are discs front, drums rear, Stopping is adequate but greatly assisted by the optional ($995) antiâ€" lock system. Price is a problem. The concept of a twenty grand plus economy car stops many people cold, but I would hope that people drive the car when trying to make a decision on a new car. It is as roomy as a midâ€"size car and it certainly is an able performer while sipping fuel along the way. It is also a Toyota which means it is solidly built to last a long time. 53 POINT INSPECTION Quality tradesâ€" men for all your alterations and renovations. Free advice and estimates.
