Pappano thinks that during the fitness craze of the 80s, women used to say, ‘I won‘t buy clothes because I‘m going to lose weight.‘ But she feels that the larger woman is now more accepting of her size and ready to invest in the same kind of wardrobe a smaller size woman has, "I think now we‘ve come back to reality, where you just go on with your life, no matter what size you are. They still want to look good and they can." What make Selina Woman different from its few designerâ€"driven comâ€" petitors is their approach to fit. The line is based on a special pattern for a size 18, not a regular size 8 made bigger. As Pappano explains, "Just because you gain weight doesn‘t mean your shoulders become football size. You put it on in certain areas of your body, but you don‘t gain it on height or in the length of your arms and legs." "But you‘re getting the same clean styling, color selection, fabric and buttons, all those things that make Selina what it is," says the designer. Selina Woman offers most of the same styles as the regular line with some visual adjustments for the different proportions of a larger woman. "As a society, we‘re so caught up with youth and slimness that we‘ve been ignoring an important customer," says its designer Lucy Pappano. ‘"For some reason, they think that you turn into a buffoon when you gain weight because they offer them the ugliest prints in cheap fabric, bad fit, and bad styling. But there are people who are saying no to that and want alternatives." In 1991, after determining there was a hole in the market for better dresses for the bigger woman, M. Baig began producing â€" Selina Woman â€" a line that runs from size 16 to 26. "The recession is hitting everyâ€" one," says Manguito, "but I do have a regular clientele. A threeâ€"piece suit for the office, for instance, is $169 and a casual outfit would be in the $120 range. "I like dealing with the pubâ€" lic and I love clothing," she says. Since starting out, she has brought two family members, her daughter and daughterâ€"inâ€"law, on board to help out in the store. Floral fabrics, tapestries and the colors black and red give the clothing in Joia Boutique its distinctive European flavor. Manguito does all her buying at Toronto fashion shows. "Every season, there are major changes in the clothing I carry," says Manguito, "but every week there is something new." ‘"Mature women are the majority of my customers," she explains, "but I do get young people as well."
