He‘s most famous for writing The Andromeda Strain as well as the book behind the recent hit movie, Jurassic Park. But this novel is something completely different: a mystery/thriller story with the fastâ€"moving and exciting plot we‘ve come to expect from Crichton. His story begins with the death of a young woman in a Japaneseâ€"owned building, one floor above the huge party being given for the building‘s grand opening. As the police force‘s Japanese liaison, Peter Smith is asked to be part of the investigation â€" which quickly turns out to be far more comâ€" plicated than he had expected. The security cameras have, apparâ€" ently, videotaped the entire event â€" so tracking down the killer should be easy. Japanese video technology, howâ€" ever, makes it possible for those interâ€" ested in covering up the crime to alter the videotapes. And the power of the Japanese companies who have investâ€" ed so heavily in America makes it equally possible for them to block Smith‘s investigation. Crichton‘s main fault is that he often crosses the line between "showâ€" ing" and "telling" â€" he has a number of points he wants to make about the Japanese takeover of American comâ€" panies, so he creates a couple of charâ€" acters who spend their time telling the others about these points.
