That was the word from Ford Motor Company‘s alternative fuels "guru" Dr. Roberta Nichols last week. Nichols was at Ford‘s Oakville headquarters last Thursday along with samples of what Ford has done in the area of alternative fuels â€" an electriâ€" cally powered Ecostar van, a flexible fuel Ford Taurus which is on the marâ€" ket for consumers at the same price as the gasoline powered model, and a Crown Victoria that runs on methanol. "Our future transportation technology will include alternative fuel vehiâ€" cles, although their numbers will remain small for many years to come because it is difficult to compete with gasoline," said Nichols. "Market research shows that the customer is, in general, wary of change. Gasoline has been doing a good job for the consumer for a hundred years and it will continue to do so for many more years to come," said Nichols. And, in North America, gasoline is a hard act to follow, its relative availability and cost making it difficult for alternative fuels to compete. Ford has developed alternative fuel vehicles, most of which are in test fleets at present. But it‘s the cost of the electric vehicle that still has the experts stumped. y Impetus for resolving that problem is couched in legislation in California, that will require any manufacturer selling vehicles in California to offer 2% of the vehicles as emission free by 1998. The only vehicles that currently don‘t have a tailpipe â€" and associated emissions â€" are electric...and costly. Today‘s consumers "are demanding the safety features in their vehicles that we couldn‘t get them to purchase a few years ago and there are indicaâ€" tors that they are willing to pay a little more for vehicles and fuels that are environmentally friendly. But not a lot more," said Nichols. And that raises major issues. An example, the electric vehicle. "There is a very high level of interest in the electric vehicle by the conâ€" sumer, but the auto industry is having real difficulty in bringing these vehiâ€" cles to market at a price that you and I can afford. At this point, we can‘t even figure out how to recover costs, let alone make a profit," said Nichols.. And when it comes to alternative fuels, different alternatives suit differâ€" ent needs. Born in Los Angeles, California, Nichols attended Santa Monica High School before making her way to UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) to study physics. Nichols built her first motor in 1960 for a boat race, but it wasn‘t until 1979 that she had headed back to school â€" having decided to switch from physics to engineering â€" and graduated with a doctorate from USC (University of Southern California). "I was working the whole time I was going to school," she states matterâ€"ofâ€"factly. â€" Sixtyâ€"oneâ€"yearâ€"old Dr. Roberta Nichols is a woman who can make men‘s mouths drop open in awe. "I have to blame all this on my daddy. He didn‘t have a boy so I was it," said Nichols, chuckling, "I didn‘t know I wasn‘t supposed to like it."
