lAnti-lock Brake System is radical safety feature By Rob Beintema Special to the Beaver he weekend seems only four or five miles away as you head I home from the office. You grab a CD from the console, look up through the blur of windshield wipers and see Old Lady Whittaker and her threeâ€"legged dog step off the curb into the path of your car. What do you do? Simple. Just slam on the brakes and steer around her. Now wait. Before you start yelling about heresy and wheel lock, there‘s one thing I forgot to mention. Your car has ABS brakes. And ABS brakes are more than just one more safety innovation. Having antiâ€"lock brakes should change the very fundamentals of our driving techâ€" niques. This is according to John Powell, automotive consultant and someone who has literally written the book on driving in Canada. Besides authoring driving manuals for provincial transport ministries and running a busy advanced driver training and racing school, John recently hosted a series of countryâ€"wide ABS sessions under the sponsorship of GM Canada. Most people have heard of antiâ€"lock braking systems by now and some of us have them on our cars. But despite their appearance on aircraft as far back as the 50‘s, they are a fairly recent autoâ€" motive innovation. Although offered earlier on some imports, it was not until the late 70‘s that consumers became more safety oriented and interest in feaâ€" tures like airbags and ABS began to After enough safety cones had been bashed around, the GM technicians restored the cars‘ ABS abilities. They also restored our confidence because the difference in braking performance But while ABS is steadily gaining wider acceptance, there still seems to be some mystery to them. Which brings us back to John Powell and a parking lot lined with safety cones. At first, John ran us through several exercises without ABS. We tried threshold braking, brake and avoidance lane changes and, of course, wheel lock. Most of us have experienced wheel lock at least once. That long yawing skid when seconds stretch to minutes. There‘s a timeless inevitability to it. All you can do is hold tight and make some quick promises to God if He just gets you out of this one. Then you either grind to a stop or hit. Engine oil change tips Q Engine oil should be changed every three months or 5,000 kilometres. Check your owner‘s manual for recommended grades. Q Oil filters should be changed with every oil change. Otherwise it can be compared to bathing in dirty bath water. Q SG is currently the highest quality motor oil on the market. As of July 1, 1993, SH will become the new standard. Q The SAE Grade (SW30 or 10W30) rates the viscosity of the oil. Remember the lower the numâ€" ber, the easier the oil will flow. Q The first number (the 5 in SW30) indicates the oil‘s viscosity in any cold weather. The W stands for winter. Q The last two numbers (the 30 in SW30) indicate the oil‘s viscosâ€" ity at warmer engine temperaâ€" tures. An SAEâ€"30 grade oil flows easier than an SAEâ€"40 oil at the same engine operating temperaâ€" ture. Q Lighter oils such as SW30 and 10W30 improve fuel econoâ€" my and extend engine life because they reach critical engine parts more quickly than 10 W40 oils. Q Energy Conserving 11 on the oil label indicates an oil that provides at least 2.7% better fuel economy when compared to stanâ€" dard reference oils. The Energy Conserving label means a 1.8% better fuel economy will be obtained. Q The advantages of synthetic motor oil include easier cold startâ€" ing, increased horsepower, quickâ€" er oil flow upon engine startâ€"up, cooler engine operating temperaâ€" tures and excellent performance for both extreme cold and warm weather driving conditions Q Used motor oil can be disâ€" posed of by taking it to a used oil collection center in your commuâ€" nity. This oil can be recycled for new oil products such as fuel oil substitute for industrial uses. Q One quart of used motor oil, if disposed of improperly, can spoil the taste of one million litres of drinking water. When you slam down that brake pedal, the dormant ABS is instantly activated. The electronic and mechaniâ€" cal systems monitor the speed of each wheel and regulate the maximum brake effect. By keeping you just out of wheel lock the system allows you the potential traction to maintain directionâ€" al control and steer around obstacles under braking. was notable The computer and solenoids are in effect pumping your brakes at up to 15 times per second and no, you can‘t do that yourself unless you‘re wearing a cape and have a big red "S" on your chest. Although braking distances will be affected by road and tire conditions, ABS brakes do make a difference. And that difference combined with modern safety technology and, more importantâ€" ly, greater driving skill and awareness ,may not just help you survive an acciâ€" dent. It might actually help prevent one Three Coupons, No Waiting. "Okay so you‘ll never guess where we‘re "Because on Sundays you can save $6 going this Sunday." on an oil change."
