"It‘s premature to say that‘s (the layoffs) definite right now because there‘s some positive work being done out there," said Liersch. For ambulance attendants, howâ€" ever, who continually complain about government funding levels and the potential affects on service, it could mean an increased workâ€" load for those remaining and the loss of ambulances on call. The Haltonâ€"Mississauga Ambulance Service is privately run, but publicly funded, and provides ambulance service in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington and Milton. The layoffs announced last week don‘t directly affect Oakville. They affect four ambulance officers in Burlington and five in Mississauga. THIS SATURDAY, SEPT. 18 8:30 P.M. "Directly, it‘s not going to hit Oakville," said Gord Armes, presiâ€" dent of Local 207 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. The layoffs would mean a dayâ€" shift ambulance in Burlington would be cut leaving only two 24â€" hour cars to service Burlington. In Mississauga, two eightâ€"hour day cars would be eliminated leavâ€" ing only five 24â€"hour cars to service Mississauga. However, Armes said the reducâ€" tion of ambulances in Oakville‘s neighboring municipalities will leave less room for them to assist in Oakville. "There‘s potentially longer delays," said Armes. "There could be a ripple effect in Oakville." "They‘ve been given notices, unless something happens between now and then, if the government says they‘re going to put more money into the system. If they don‘t do that then the layoffs are going to happen. We‘re hoping it doesn‘t. We‘ve got our fingers crossed but who knows what the government‘s going to do or the priâ€" vate operators," said Armes. Each of the 95 ambulance offiâ€" cers and supervisors still have to take their 12 "Rae days", said Armes, adding that will further stress the service. %, The nine ambulance officers received their layoff notices last week. The layoffs will go into effect Oct. 10th. The nine layoffs are not linked to Premier Bob Rae‘s Social Contract. BTHE FUGITIVE = tou» FREE WNILLY *= CROSSE & BLACKWELL NUT LOAVES _ _ .
