We pay for the MPP‘s housing and meals while in Toronto for parliamenâ€" tary sittings even though we already pay for the heat, hydro, water, securiâ€" ty, taxes, and upkeep of Queen‘s Park, year round. I suggest that MPPs put davenports in their offices at Queen‘s Park and sleep on them while parliaâ€" ment is sitting. This would be a major savings to the tax payers of Ontario. If We, as taxpayers, currently pay for our MPPs transportation to and from work, while we ourselves, have to pay for this out of our own meager earmnâ€" ings after taxes. If our MPPs choose not to sit on any extra committees, I am sure they can, and most assuredly, will add some other fax free perq to their already outrageous repertoire of tax free perqs, to the detriment of the Ontario tax payer. The MPP‘s basic wage pays well for their services to us and to the province and should be sufficient enough to pay for any committee time our MPPs may put in. We, the taxpayâ€" ers, should not have to pay extra for our MPPs to sit on a committee. I ask... who do the MPPs think they are fooling? This 5.5% yearly wage cut amounts to tokenism at its best. Unlike the common tax paying Ontario citizen, our fat cat politicians can make up this 5.5% yearly wage cut by sitting on one or more extra committees within the year, with each committee participation giving them an extra $2,000 to $5,000 tax free dolâ€" lars. So I ask... what are the MPPs actually giving up? The obvious answer is absolutely nothing!!! Dear Sir: I have noted, with interest, that our MPPs consider the recently announced 5.5% yearly pay cut imposed upon them, as fair. This judgement of fairness apparently coming due to the fact that they are asking others, including employees, to take the same cuts in their wages. olitical pundits may be right * when they say the election campaign is still in its infancy. In one speech, warning Canadians about the unemployment rate continuing high until 2000, she wiped out any political advantage she had coming out of a summer of photo ops. So what, say these experts, so what if the Conservative leader made a major goof by treating job losses like some economics lecture? Big deal. She‘ll bounce back. And so, any goofs made this early on will be forgotten by the end of the campaign. But what she and her advisors have forgotten that the person who is handâ€" ing you the hot dog from across the counter is likely one of the 41% of Canadians who fears for their job. Anxiety and worry are a part of life for far too many people these days and it‘s an imprudent politician who can‘t tap into that immediately. She stumbled badly over this one. It may leave a lasting impression in voters minds that here is a woman who may wander about malls shaking people‘s hands and munching on a hot dog.
