ce n o By KATHY YANCHUS Oakville Beaver Staff Lettice and Lovage, the Burlâ€"Oak Theatre Group production which opens the 1993/94 Oakville Drama Series, is "a great treat for the eye and the ear," accordâ€" ing to actress Maria Heidler. "It contains all the elegant wit you would expect from Peter Shaffer, (Equus and Amadeus)," adds Heidler, who portrays Lettice, a role written specifically for British actress Maggie Smith. The script itself is a powerful story of two women who through their roles of employer and employee seem mired in opposition and dissimilarity, however, with the help of a few strange confessions and a truly hysterical disaster, they discover they are not so differâ€" ent afterall, explains Burlâ€"Oak‘s Rick Dobbie. "The resolution of the disaster cements the friendâ€" ship of the two...one of the greatest credits of this play is that it not only allows the audience to look at the world we live in, but to do so in a gently critical manner..." says Dobbie. Heidler describes some of the situations within the play, as "hilarious, just ridiculous," and she looks forâ€" ward to the role with great relish. A professional actress in England for 17 years, Heidler brings a great deal of savvy to the production; she is in tune with the pressures and the energy required "to keep going." Heidler arrived in Oakville in 1988 shortly after marâ€" rying a Canadian actor and after witnessing a couple of Burlâ€"Oak performances at the Oakville Centre, decided to throw her talents into the pool. "I was so impressed withtheir work," she says. Since that time, she has worked with Stagecraft and has launched her professional Canadian career as well with a number of commercials as well as TV roles to her credit. Most recently, she has appeared on the CBC show Material World and will be seen in the miniâ€"series Dieppe this fall and the Family Channel‘s Are You Afraid of the Dark series. Heidler also made her debut as a director during Theatrefest ‘93 at the Centre when she was at the helm for Burlâ€"Oak‘s entry, Escurial, which earned her a nomiâ€" We‘re looking for ONTARIO JUNIOR CITIZENS Do you know a young person, aged 6 to 18 years, who is involved in worthwhile comntunity a special person who is contributing, Wwhile living with a physical or psychological limitation? Sharing the stage with Heidler in Lettice and Lovage will be Carol Wilson, another veteran actress who was intensely involved in theatre before giving it up for 20 years to raise her family and teach school. "I guess I just decided that at this stage in my life I could again do something for myself," says Wilson, mother of two daughters. In a short period of time, Burlâ€"Oak and the Oakville Players "took a chance on a complete unknown" and Wilson has already landed two major roles. Wils o n ¢ describes her character, Lotte, ‘ as "complex" and is just as enthusiastic about _ the play as Heidler. "It‘s= "a marvelous play. There‘s lots of depth, a lot to think about and a lot to work with," says Wilson. Wilson, who was involved in community theatre for many years in her native Britain, never really got away from it integrating drama into her school curriculum and writing a drama anthology which won her an award from the Womens Federation of Teachers of Ontario.
