To my parents, I can‘t thank you enough or quite put into words what this past year has meant to me. Thank you all. \ During both semesters of our 10‘/ month voyage, we sailed 28,775 nautical miles, embarking from Montreal August 19, 1992 and finally disembarking in San Francisco on June 29, 1993. We travelled to remote and special places, including 37 ports in North American, Europe, Africa, Central and South America and the South Pacific. Our hours under sail totalled 1,643 and hours on engine 2,765. We experienced wind force of Beaufort 8 and over. Our Oakville head office staff, branch staff and associates wish Sarah more memorable adventures, and continued s sailing. A Proud Sponsor supporting Sarah on her voyage By LIZ CAMPBELL When Ralph Srigley bought a small bankrupt jewellery store called Antikreations in 1981, it was the realization of a lifelong dream to own his own business. After two years, and much cogitation, he and his wife, Joyce, changed the name to Srigley‘s Fine Jewellers. Why? "If you‘re proud of your business, put your own name on it," he says reasonably. "Some of this country‘s most famous businesses are named after their founders." nnnnn Quality Service, Never Out Of Fashion At Srigleys With typical selfâ€"deprecation, he Riovat LePAcGE] Sincerely, To me, Class Afloat is Exploration; exploration of the world and exploration of myself. It has stretched my limits and broadened my views â€"from African markets to giant tortoises. It was a wonderful year which I am very grateful for and will never forget. During this past year, I have learned many things. I have learned how to climb to the top of an 118 ft. mast, and set sails to harness the wind. I have learned how to cope with living in a confined environment without going mad. I have learned how different people around the world are, and yet that we all belong to the same species of homo sapiens. All these things have taught _ me _ confidence, _ patience, understanding, determination, and hope for our world. credits his many years with the Loblaws/Weston Foods group for the experience and knowledge of management that has enabled him to succeed. But, there‘s no doubt that Srigley is providing what his customers want. "If you look after your customers â€" provide good service and quality at reasonable prices â€" they‘ll keep coming back," says Srigley. And, believe it or not, Srigley‘s everyday prices really are lower than most sale prices the competition offers when you compare 300 South Service Rd. West MERAY OF OAKVILLE Srigley‘s sells only fine quality jewellery, most of which is designed for them by European craftspeople. Recently, they acquired a number of pieces in sterling silver and gold by noted Montreal designer, Jules Perrier. Much of their collection is composed of oneâ€"ofâ€"aâ€"kind, handâ€"made items, like woolly mammoth ivory pendants: and bracelets created by Richard Marcus of quality. While that simple formula sounds a bit hokey, it has, in fact, been the basis for the success of many a company. for 1993 O SARAH‘S SPONSORS Sarah and her parents are grateful for the sponsorship of the Oakville Beaver and 22 advertisers who have made this voyage possible for Sarah. His curious name, Downtown Ralph, came from a customer who had been shopping at Oakville Place, looking for a custom jewellery designer. They recommended "some guy named Ralph in downtown Oakville." The customer came in and asked him, "Are you Downtown Ralph?" and the name stuck. Srigley encourages his own staff to become more knowledgeable. When Kim Hutchinson â€"â€" a fullâ€"time salesperson â€" decided to take a gemmology course, Srigley sponsored her. She graduated top of her class with 98%. And she‘s decided to go on to study gemmology. Now she works partâ€"time at Srigley‘s while she studies. Interesting enough, at a time when major chains like Birks and Peoples Credit Jewellers are closing stores, Srigley‘s is expanding into larger quarters, only a block from their last home. Courageous? Foolhardy? No. Srigley believes that the time to grow is when everyone else is shrinking. After all, in the stock market, when everyone is selling, that‘s when prices plummet and it‘s time to buy. When other stores are cutting inventory and advertising budgets, Srigley is expanding both. He‘s offering his customers even more selection and it‘s paying off. Vancouver. Srigley is always on the lookout for exciting, new artists. Srigley‘s might be growing in size, but it‘s still a family business, and Ralph‘s wife and his daughter, Elizabeth, take an active role in running the store. Ralph, himself, was ill last year and has "eased off". "I only come in fourâ€" andâ€"aâ€"half days a week these days, instead of six," he smiles. But it‘s a business that he loves and being there is no hardship for the outgoing, friendly Srigley who patently enjoys helping his customers find what they want. Srigley‘s is one of Oakville‘s premier jewellers. He offers little bonus extras, too. Like the crazy diamondâ€"studded gold bowâ€"tie which customers buying their wedding bands at Srigley‘s can borrow to wear at the wedding. And he presents his pieces in interesting little containers â€" little Christmas drums and bells, and other neat ways of concealing that special gift. When Mayor Harry Barrett needed a presentation pin for the captains of the tall ships visiting Oakville, he asked Ralph Srigley to design one. The gold oakleaf pin he created has become a standard gift for visiting dignitaries and celebrities. It‘s a formula for success many small businesses could emulate. + Loblaws » Food City » Canadian Tire * Kmart « AP *Ultra Mart *Miracle Mart + BiWay * 1.G.A. *Vim Micro Liquid *Longo‘s « Aikenhead‘s * Partial Delivery
