This week commemorates the great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed 250 persons, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings. I call upon the people of this Town to participate in fire prevention .activities at home, work and school, and to heed the message: "GET OUT, STAY OUT! YOUR FIRE SAFE RESPONSE." â€" . WHEREAS planning ahead and practicing can greatly enhance our ability to escape from fire. The value of escape planning at home, at work, and wherever we are is wellâ€" documented. Every fire escape plan should include a meeting place outside where everyone can be accounted for and await the Fire Department. Is proud to recognize our local firefighters for their dedication to the community Acknowledging the seriousness of the firesetting problem, the OFM, in cooperation with several communityâ€" based government agencies and the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, has Furthermore, few of these proâ€" grams have involved formal working relationships between agencies within the public and private sectors who have a special expertise or interest in youthful firesetting. This translates into losses of milâ€" lions of dollars and immeasurable grief and suffering for the children and their families. Despite the apparâ€" ent seriousness of youthful firesetting, the OFM discovered that few firesetâ€" ting intervention programs were availâ€" able to address this problem. Unfortunately, these tragic events are not isolated incidents, but happen virtually every day in cities across Ontario. It is estimated that over 50% of incendiary fires investigated by the OFM are motivated by mischief or vandalism and are started predomiâ€" nantly by young people. n Hagersville, a disastrous tire fire was started by four teenagers. It burned continuously for 17 days and required Ontario‘s first provincial emergency response team to extinguish it. In Hamilton, a youth set fire to a stairwell in an apartment building following an argument with a friend. The fire claimed the lives of two people. In Metropolitan Toronto, a 3â€"yearâ€"old playing with a lighter, startâ€" ed a fire that took the life of a family member.
